Stuck at home and bored out of my skull

I have to hang around and look after a sick relative. I have periods that I can devote to gaming, but Civ3 is worse than staring at peeling paint. Does anyone have a suggestion of a game that:

1. is TBS with PBEM capability
2. has depth (like with SMAC/SMAX)
3. or otherwise might be able to keep my interest for more than a few minutes.

Sadly, most game publishers seem to be pushing "dumbed down" games like Civ3 and there seems to be a virtual vaccum of games of substance.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have a suggestion: post this in the other games forum

but seriously, the next game that I am going to purchase is Heroes of Might and Magic IV, which may or may not be your cup of tea, but has (i think) some if not all of the features you requested (i'm not sure if it can be pbem) I think this game will be released this week.
