Seems the concensus is pathfinding as the problem...
Well, I think it would be a time-consuming calculation. But, the computer players seem to move their units in circles all the time. If the computer players would have their units sit tight until needed, then a lot of time would be saved. Of course, this is usually a problem toward the end of the middle ages and beyond... once railroads are around, I wonder if AI units simply circle and circle and circle sometimes.
I play on huge maps with a Athlon 800 MHz / 128 MB RAM and it's not that bad waiting in between turns. Maybe 20-30 seconds.
