Explorers = Saboteurs?
I think Explorers were misnamed. Frankly, by the time they are available 99.6% of the world is discovered anyway, so as “explorers” they’re utterly useless. They’re pretty worthless for reconnaissance as well, due to the lack of any combat values.

Ah, but they can pillage! Send a few of these guys into enemy territory with a strong defensive unit, or better still, an army, and they’ll strip the countryside bare like hungry locust. Since they treat all terrain as roads and have a movement of two, they have great mobility and can move two spaces, pillage and return to the safety of the defensive unit. Also, they can execute long-range one-way penetration strikes to strategic and luxury resources up to five spaces away. Used properly, they can be a very useful strategic tool to deny an enemy a critical resource, vital transportation route or essential supply line.

Explorers nothing; these guys are veritable partisans, roaming freely behind enemy lines and destroying anything not being actively guarded. They should be renamed, IMHO.

Anyone else been successful in using Explorers this way?

I've had success with explorers.

Haven't used them in large numbers but when you send a couple of them to different parts of an enemy empire watch out. They are great for striking resources from the AI's inventory!

Well, I guess great minds do indeed think alike. I've never been to Civfanatics before, so I obviously missed this. Thanks for the link!
