Plans for Multiplayer?
Sorry if this is well-known (I'm a n00b here, you see ), but I was wondering if there were any plans for a Multiplayer patch/expansion for Civ III within the next... oh, year? Beating up on a computer that cheats and doesn't use artillery is a tad repetitive.

The last I heard, Firaxis stated that Civ3 Multiplay was scheduled for release some time this summer (but of course an actual release date is NOT etched in stone). This statement was made last fall, but Firaxis has been silent since then....so no body really knows for sure (except Firaxis).

firaxis never made that CLEAR.

Actually, my "gut feeling" is that Civ3 MP will eventually be released as a multiplayer VERSION and not an expansion.

Why do you ask? Well, thank you for asking. Take a look at the Civilization history:

First there was Civilization --> which lead to release of CivNET version (not an expansion).

Then there was Civilization II --> which lead to the release of Civ2 MGE version (again, not an expansion).

Now there is Civ3 --> which, IMHO, will lead to the release of Civ3 MP version.

Do you REALLY think that they will change their tactic and release it as an expansion?... I, for one, don't think so.

Even though SMAC was released with MP support from the start, IMO, it was not meant to be apart of the Civilization "close" family - just a cousin. SMAC doesn't deal with the race TO Alpha Centauri, just the race ON Alpha Centauri.

Again, this is all just an analysis of what I think is going to happen.

Exactly Uber, but then they HAD to make the Christmas deadline...

Money makes the world go around and you can bet that they will demand their additional pound of flesh from us when Civ3MP is released just like Civ and Civ2. Oh well, what can you do?

the jackal.txt is a legacy of the engine used, the SMAC engine. the same file is also in SimGolf...
