Let us name our units.
That should be something that Firaxis could impliment. Instead of "Battleship," we could rename it to "USS Dallas" or whatever. The elite Samurai unit that just took out two invading Cavalry units deserves a name. You wouldn't have to name everything, but it would be kinda cool to be able to name the unit if you want to.

that suggestion was made back a while ago before firaxis finailized the game.
they ignored it.
we wanted to name geographical formations and / or units / divisions of units.

I agree, and I thought of something the other day.
When you go into the military advisor screen and look at the unit list by type, you can see the locations on the map of specific units- this isn't based on geography as far as i can tell- which indicates that keeping track of individual units is already in the game. I dont know why they wouldn't take the next step and let us name those units.

In SMAC you could at least name the land features. Dont know why they took it out.

The Real Answer...
After Civ1 was finished several programmers must have went into a cave to start working on Civ2, but never came out. All the time never learning about the great advancements Civ2, SMAC, or CTP2 made. Months after Civ2, SMAC, & CTP2 were out they finally came out from the caves proclaiming they invented the best AI (which they did). Programmers wanted a break & marketing wanted it sold as is, so out it went. However, instead of calling it Civ2 they would now call it Civ3 & shortly before release a couple cds accidently fell in some tin boxes... and the rest is history.

Yeah, yeah, yeah...
In answer to the original concept, I very much agree... the idea that I've had is that at least Armies should be named, much like some of the historied units of the English, French, and US military. Esprit de corps, and all that.
UberKrux, I live in Manhattan, and seriously dig the image.

Nice idea, but it would make the game even harder to edit than it already is.

I agree that adding the ability to name units, and maybe geographical locations, might make the game harder to edit. But I rarely edit the game except to make little tweaks here and there. However, I have played CTP2 and I know that the ability to name the units helps a lot. My memory is already poor and the ability to give a unit a name that describes what I want it do is very useful. So, yes, I hope that Firaxis includes this feature. Besides, it shouldn't be that hard. It might slow the game down, but I can live with that.

Sounds good. Sounds like a relatively cheap fun element for the game. It lacks fun toys anyway, so I'd appreciate if Firaxis would implement it. Add an option in the right-click menu "Name the unit". Let the name appear "on mouse over". That's it.
So let 'em fight, the 21st infantry division as well as the battleship "Bismarck".

Yep, that's how I visioned it. I am positive that this is something that can be implimented without too much of a hassle programming-wise. Then, when that Ironclad sinks your frigate. You can say, "Well, here comes Old Ironsides! That will teach ya!"
Of course as luck will have it. The Ironclad with 1 HP left will probaly sink your Elite "Old Ironsides."

The nice thing about CTP2 is that you can name unit formations. I like to name a stack of units something like 1st Mountain Division.
I wish this feature of just naming units would be in Civ3. Remember Imperialism/Imperialism 2? In those games you could rename individual units.

It's not hard to code, add a 20 bytes buffer to the unit structure and implement a bit i/o, nothing difficult. The only bad issue that I foresee is, that it will make the savegames incompatible. But with a bit goodwill that can be solved codewise, generate a dull standard name (or an empty one) and it's done.

I also would like a name stuck to the unit and not the formation. The CtP2 solution sucks, everytime you remake a formation it generates a new name.

Savegame Compatibility
The programming would be simple and there would be no compatability problems if the coding included a name defaulting routine. There is some other game I've played but can't remember the name that allows customization of every name in the game but reverts to the original names if loaded on another system. It may have been VGA Planets.
Conquest of the New World allows you to name rivers, mountains, and other geographic features if you are the first to discover them. Such a feature would be a great way to add another way to get points in Civ3 other than through brute force.
(Conquest is a great game but I can't get it to run under XP )

I like this idea. It would not only add a great deal of interest to the game, but weould make it much easier to keep track of the 60 infantry units I have running around.
