Norinel, you are right about Civilopedia spoiling the
first game, but hidden the Civilopedia, as Jeje2 pointed out,
is not the right answer.
If you look The List v.2 (or try some Forum search) you can see some very good proposal to add some change and dynamic to tech tree every game.
My favourite (check it
here: 2.4 Prerequisite points and all others proposal, if you like) is the concept of amount of specific research points needed every tech level, defining multiple path to research advance.
That will leave plenty of uncertain about research every game, without the needs of a "hidden Civilopedia".
