Well, add in a couple hundred years or more of polluting space, that'll probably make the waste more noticeable to us, and a couple thousand to a million years of this will certainly have more serious effects, even if just in our local galaxy or so.

Actually no. I know that we landed on the moon in 1969, but couldn't for the life of me, tell you the date of it.

Space is a vacuum. You can junk it up but not pollute it.

Sputnik is more important.
Gugarin went up in space for 30 minutes.....was sick and disoriented most of the time. And scientifically, it wasnt worth the millions the Russians put up for it.
The Moon...(or arizona desert, depending on your viewpoint) was a larger accomplishment.
Ya the EU mig surpass us. They tricked us into that multi-billion dollar dollar space station, and now its bill is too large and is eating up our future budgets.

Yes, because every year on the day they landed on the moon (what day was that?), we hold huge parties and get together with all our friends and family.
It gets a blurb on the news, just like your thing probably did.

I recently read a book entitled RED MOON by Michael Cassutt which is a fictionalized look at the Space Race from the Soviet perspective. Cassutt is a noted Space historian and is the author of the encyclopedic Who's Who In Space.
The book is really good BTW.

It is quite disappointing how little is said about Gagarin in western society, like it is insignificant, yet in real terms probably more significant than the moon landings.
Was Laika your third hero Andy?

Too true. We joke about how the Soviets claimed to have invented everything, but then we ignore their greatest accomplishments. Such hypocrisy.

Nice trolling.
But you are wrong. A usual day is not worth enough to getting drunk for us. We drink only to celebrate major dates, like French revolution’s date or the fishermen’s day or women’s day or Army’s day or *whatever*-day.
So, we only drink at celebrates, we don’t drink at common days.
Ah… almost forget, when we are dry, we usually do some unimportant things, just for our fun, like launching first man in space or launching first probe to Venus or building first Nuclear plant or inventing something unimportant like Laser, that sort of things. We are doing such things only because we feel bore between drunken parties.
(I’m kidding)

May be by Laika he mean Belka and Strelka- first dogs launched in space. We used dogs as test animals while US used monkeys for this purpose.
