I mean, this is the culture that brought us Nasubi, Yatta!, and oodles of tentacle rape hentai. From our Western perspective, are the Japanese truly nuts?

Their TV is hilarious... I would have to say yes for insane. When I was visiting the Grand Canyon last year, there were some Japanese girls in a large group. Whatever you do, don't make them laugh. It is a cycle of pain that does not stop.

Hentai is very various in Japan :

Japanese aren't insane. Most have sex as 'normal' as western. But there are some pervert who prefere 'extrem' sex and they are less hidden than in western countries. Since all is permited in hentai manga. They think that it ius better for pevert to free there libido on manga rather on real people.

I don't think it's a bad solution.

How much anime have you actually watched? I would say that hardly any is as bad as you describe it. Anyways, I actually haven't seen any hentai, but there's plenty of insanity and craziness to go around in some of the stuff I've seen...

In a recent survey they were the peoples with the least sexual intercourse in the world.

That's why they are sick bastards.

Also the women of Japan are supressed. They have far fewer rights as the "western" women do.
Japanese culture is way more phalocratic than the "western" one.

Also, schoolgirls in mass transportation means are regurarly harrased by old men and noone cares to protect them.

All in all, Japanese have issues.

They have a superiority complex, they believe themselves to be superior. Inferiority complex means to believe you are inferior.

I don't blame them for their defense budget. They imperialized most of the Eastern Orient countries in the last 100 years before WWII. A lot of them hate the Japanese. Plus you've got two of the worst commie regimes to the east; China and North Korea. Plus, I wouldn't trust Russia if I were the Japanese.

Japan has just as much right to maintain an army as any other nation on Earth.

As for Japan having the second highest defense budget in the world, IIRC Japan has always limited its defense budget to 1% of its GDP. When you have the second largest economy on Earth, however, 1% is a lot of money. Despite this, I don't think anyone who is knowledgable on the subject would claim that Japan is remilitarizing or planning to abandon its peacetime constitution. Japan has a capable and high tech force, but it is built specifically for defensive purposes (hence the name "Self Defense Forces"). Japan has the money and technology to build a world class offensive force, but they haven't done so yet and have expressed no plans to do so.
