Slow Pokes.
I want to know what slowpokes do during their turns? Cuz maybe we can eleminate the time it takes them to do stuff...

Here is what i do every turn.

1. I never have more then 5 units to move a turn. When building caravans i build all caravans and move them all to my capitol, or the biggest enemy city i can find.. if it demends the goods or not doesn't matter.

2. happy citizens, i just use the F4 key when its not my turn and check to see if anyone is unhappy.

3. trade is maxed out permently in my 6 biggest cities. other other cities don't matter a bit, and are usually a few steps behind my core cities.

I just wince when it takes somebody 2 minutes a turn, and they only have two units on the board

I also try to move as quick as possible, with city changes being made between turns. The only thing that slows me down is the amount of beer drunk as the game moves into the wee hours of the morning

1 - Often you can do with more units though, especially in duels. If you only have a couple units moving around in a duel you sacrifice a lot of opportunities for taking undefended cities, etc.

2 - As long as you don't manage cities on your turn it doesn't matter how you do it.

3 - I max out production in some of my big cities, too. I also try to keep other cities well managed though - but again I do it all when it's not my turn.

i think its pretty safe to say that all of us max out production or science depending on what the city is capable of......i use the city screens to check each turn...and i too don't do micro on my turns...thats what the other guyz turns are for...but some of you

The only time I micro during my turn is during the first 20 turns of a duel. (and this is limited to buying up) Too many times I ended up with an extra warrior or phalanx instead of a settler because the other players turn only took 3 seconds.

There are exceptions, but those few are beer related.

2x games probably take a little longer because more units are produced in the first 20 turns.

We do have a few quick players that are considerably limited by their connection. (glances at berz)

i move units during my turn and do micro during the other peoples' turns. i do switch production thru the pop up screens at the start of my turn. if i don't, i end up with loads of wasted shields 1 or 2 turns later when i check my production

ok but later in a 7 player game... how come some people... aka diety take 40 minutes to move while others take 1 minute.

Whenever it takes somebody over a few minutes to take THEIR FIRST DAMN TURN... I can just picture them downloading the save to disc and using a second computer to view the map

On an island map with lighthouse, I usualy only build Tiremmes and caravans (and off course massive amounts of settlers and the odd horse)
Trying to manage this logistic nightmare usualy takes a lot of time.
And what I really hate is when some guy with half the city's and tech, no ships or caravans whatsoever starts to whine about how much time I use.

Some strategy's just take more time then others......

People take a long time because they aren't totally familiar with the game yet. Not everyone can keep track of exactly where each unit is, what each city is doing, that sort of thing. Therefore they must go and recheck those things whereas with us we can simply know what is going on everywhere and keep it down to a minimum. When I'm playing a civ2 game my mouse doesn't stop moving. I look like I"m playing an RTS game when I play because the map just keeps flicking all over the place because I'm constantly planning out the next moves in advance so I know exactly where to move each unit and what city is going to do what next so when my turn does come around I can zoom through it.

That was one game and it was simul and the timer was on 20 mins for a start. I had 100+ units and dozens of freight and huge shipping lines. You guys had less than 30 units or so. I was developing a very complex unit based strategy. I had Leo's, I had lots of Warriors and Horses that became Rifes and Cavalry LOL

I don't always stick to the same boring strategy that you do; plus my connection is very variable.

In our aborted Tourney game I was quicker than you and Makeo cos you guys were at war. I was being very boring in that game and doing what you often do

In most other games I'm as quick as anyone else subject to my strategy and connection... hey I even told DD to hurry up the other day!

I micro outside my turn except in Simul.

Occasionally I might pause to think about an option if I find something new. For goodnes sakes it's not meant to be a formula game based on a speed race. It's a rich game and I think your type of thinking is channeling folks thinking down the formula path... when the formula goes off the rails because of other complexities/deals etc such players miss out on this richness.

yup. strat was the slowest (or at least one of the slowest). I think if I would have ever asked him about that, he would have told me long speeches about the advantages of micromanaging. he felt surpreme since he thought, he´d be the only one managing his cities each turn. and so he also had the right of playing slower.

my theory.

My turns are usually very short - unless there's sex scene on the TV or one of the children starts vomiting in bed or the baby needs a bottle

During Deity's turn I usually make a sandwich and a cup tea, have a cigarette or 2, watch a movie, make love to my wife, finish painting the house, check my E-mail, talk to finbar and Hydey on icq, arrange a new housing loan and an overseas holiday, ring my mum, pay the household bills, do my tax return, surf the net, work on my novel, go for a jog, do some car repairs, have a long shower and when I get back I get on kingchat and tell him to hurry up.

You guys have just got to learn to use the time in a Deity turn better

I think he probably does a lot of 'clicking on the black' during his turns too. After all you don't really need to micro during your turns unless it's something really vital.

BRAVO, BRAVO

When I play at Ming's on Fridays and Jrabbit would try to watch and figure out what I was doing, he used to say that I would click on so many thing quickly inbetween my turns that he couldn't keep up what I was doing. You're right, if you know what you're going to do, it's much faster. If I sneak a smoke or go to the bathroom inbetween turns, my turn will take a little longer.

I am willing to cut fast players slack when they have a major offensive going, because I know it's an exception and not the norm. Besides major offensives are fun.

Come on guys. That was one turn. Its was a seven man game so I walked away from the comp for a minute and when I cam back its was my turn. On top of that someone had landed in my civ. I tried to contact them to tell them to leave or I would kill them. They didn't respond so then I had to batll and take the rest of my turn.

Things to do in Deity's turn
Oh, its Deity's turn.......

Put another log on the fire.
Cook me up some bacon and some beans.
And go out to the car and change the tire.
Wash my socks and sew my old blue jeans.
Come on, baby, you can fill my pipe
And then go fetch my slippers.
And boil me up another pot of tea.
Then put another log on the fire babe,
And come & tell me why you're playing Deity.

Now don't I let you wash the car on Sunday?
And don't I warn you when you're gettin fat?
Ain't I a-gonna take you fishin' with me someday?
Well, a man can't love a woman more than that.
And ain't I always nice to your kid sister?
Don't I take her driving every night?
So, sit here at my feet cause I like you when you're sweet,
And you know it ain't feminine to fight.

So, put another log on the fire.

Interesting discussion this is
I have just downloaded the MP feature, and I was wondering how I would manage a large Civ in just a few minutes. Good to read here you can still manage your cities during other peoples turn
So if I understand right: the only essential thing to do on my own turn is to move my pieces around, and leave the rest for in between turns
By the way: it seems all you guys ar playing eachother in six games simultanuously. Any room left somewhere for a newby at MP

P.S.: I really like these diplogames stories to read. Keep going at them

Diety is slow... As for people blaming it on their connections that is just pure BS. If your connection is truely bad the host would get stalls and it would get choppy for everyone. Since civ is a real time game you can tell exactly how much lag someone has by watching their units move. If their units are moving the same speed by your civ, as units from other civs then its fairly certain that there is no lag..

9 out of 10 times, I'll agree with that, but there are exceptions.

Berz's connection is sometimes horrendous. And you can tell, because like you said, the host gets stalls and it is choppy. When his turns are taking a long time and he says it's his connection, I believe it. For a few others, I don't.

God, I loathe slow players...

What the f*ck takes so long when everybody only has 5 or 6 units?

Don't answer, I know, some are cheating, others are just dense.

I had one guy arguing borders in 3500 BC, holding the turn for 20 mintues!

Little jerk-off.
