Reminds me of the classic Rah story... He runs across another persons unit early in the game. Sends him a message that if he won't agree to back off... the unit would be toast.
After repeated such warnings, with no response, he killed the settler.
A few minutes later the guy finally responded with something like, I was taking a piss... did I miss something...

Yes, that was a classic.
This weekend I told SF that If he built a city in a certain location that I would destroy it. He did, I did. At least he didn't whine about it. Thank god he couldn't rush a phalanx faster. Even though I had a horde of horses heading in that direction.

You know Markus exagerates...
The timer was on 20 mins in a simul game at 1300Ad or so when I had 100+ units, dozens of freight and complex strategies at work. In other games I'm way quicker than that and I don't care what anyone says, my connection is a variable factor. The parrots even eat our phone lines once a year as the Aussies will tesify!
It's true that in that game I couldn't finish my turns in 20 mins but I kept playing with that restriction. Anyway, it's Elendil and Markus who quit the game!

On behalf of 19-ish million other Australians, I wish to refute any notion that our parrots eat phone lines. Furthermore, on behalf of a couple of thousand-ish parrots, I'm issuing a writ for defamation.

Spreading lies again? I wasn't exagerating we set the timer to 20 minutes after you SAT THERE FOR 40 minutes! And I didn't quit that game the french quit and then Elendil quit.
Your also lieing about the number of units you had to move etc. You had a grand total of about 20 units to move.. thats what, 1 unit per minute?
Attached is the final save of the game... Funny its nothing like how you describe it.

What is the obsession with speed. I just don't get it.
I thought this was a strategy game.
If someone takes a little longer then you wanted - have another sip of beer
I've heard so many people in these forums put down the zone as "arcade civ" and I have always agreed with that assessment. But quite often I see alot of people putting down players in here for playing to slow. It seems a little contradictory to me.
When I play someone, I am interested in thier best game not thier quickest.
Different strategies, different connection speeds, different levels of experience, differences in age, differences in attitude, differences as humans, 1 player has 5 cities and 7 units another has 25 cities and 30 units.....
They are all factors.
I say sit back and enjoy the game. Afterall, if you are in a rush you shouldn't be playing civ.

Well said DD! God's rule...
I agree with Markus that my preferred turn length was approaching 40 mins (simul). We discussed it and agreed to a 20 min timer. I still couldn't finish my turns but I accepted it for the sake of the game.
I wasn't twiddling my thumbs though. I had way more than 20 units with freight etc.
When Capo took over the French and attacked Elendil, Elendil quit the game (after much debate and voting) and Markus wanted to quit as well. I certainly didn't want to end it there. Berzerker was wanting to play on, as was Capo (in the end) and Easthaven.

To be fair, unlike some others, Markus would probably have stayed in the game if Elendil hadn't quit....

I'm not obsessed with speed but when you have players taking over an hour to take a turn and you can only play once a week for 3 hours and your turn is taking 2 minutes it does tend to become annoying.

Well, it seems that me and Berz are the only
ones interested in continuing the Millenium
game
I don't want to make Elendil feel bad but the
guts got kicked out of it when he left. I
think the only way it will get going again is
if he comes back.
The reason we didn't want to continue is because you wanted to change it to turn based.. Most of us where not prepared to sit through 7 players taking 20 minute turns. Note you where taking 20 minute turns WHILE EVERYONE WAS AT PEACE!

If I ever get to Deity's house I'm going to watch him take a turn. I really want to know what he is doing.
I have some theories, its either extreme micro or procrastination or both. And the famous dodgy parrot infested connection - I just gotta see that.

AH - I can understand your point (the situation you describe (you take 2 mins and opponent takes an hour) would annoy me too)but by the same token I doubt anyone purposely delays a game.
Deity - Thanks but I wasn't really referring to the game being discussed (seeing as I know nothing about it) but just the attitude in general of some of the players.
There seems to be a lack of "civ"ility amongst some of the players. (Pun definitely intended ).
If you don't play at "the appropriate speed" you are insulted and perhaps accused of cheating.
Offhand comments are recorded, archived and distributed purposely out of context.
Etc. etc. etc
Some have told me that "that is the big leagues" or "mind games are part of the game". Well maybe so, but alot of this seems to me to be outside the game.
Maybe that would make a good discussion thread soometime.
Again - I'm not referring specifically to the game being discussed above.

I don't mind when a person's turn takes a little longer every now and then. But when it happens turn after turn after turn, then it's obvious that the person is making too many decisions during his movement and doing some micromanagement, or just being rude (intentionally or not). As AH says, I don't have that much free time, and I put every effort into making my turn as fast as possible, and I expect others that I play with to do the same.
When we Identify such players, we stop asking them to join us.

I'm surprised some people don't understand how annoying waiting for 10 minutes for one player, especially in games with 4 or more people.
Sitting at your PC for 30 minutes doing nothing (you did everything you could think of the first ten minutes ) is not exactly an enjoyable experience.
I have noticed there are cronic slow players.
There is no reason to take 10 minutes to move unless you are in a war and have hundreds of units.
You should know where you are sending your caravans, check during your opponet's turn.
Have a plan for your settlers/engineers.
Know what you are doing with exploring units.
Have a goal for diplos/spies.
The game is TBS, yes, but that doesn't mean bore the other guy to death.
Actually, that gives me an idea:
Chris' new stratigic intiative
Take as long as humanly possible, in order to frustrate your opponets, so they will concede based on boredom.
Chris: Ha ha, I see your dazzled by my brilliant moves!
Op 1: What moves? You haven't moved in an hour!
Op 2: Guys, my wife thinks you are all porn chicks, because she never sees this game screen change!
Op 3: My oldest daughter is now ready for college.
Chris: Congratulations!
Op 3: She was in preschool when the turn started!
Op 2: Why are you distracting him?
Chris: I seem to have lost my train of thought, I need to re-evaluate my turn.
Op 1: I have to go to the can, is this going to take long?
Chris: It's important to.....blah blah blah....
(2 hours later) and that's the essence of good game play!
Op 2: What did he say?
Op 3: Oh god, don't ask him to repeat it!
Op 1: Er, guys, I pied my pants.
Chris: Ah, since I wasn't clear obviously, let me begin again..
Op 1: NOOOOOOOOO!!!!
Op 2: That's it, I quit!
Op 3: This is too much, I'm through with this!
Chris: Ha ha, sweet victory!
I doubt the above tactics would go over well with most...

Well DD, in the game with RAH, you had 8 cities and 22 units and rah had 22 cities and 68 units.. You took 3 -5 times as long to move as RAH. IN our dip game, you take you take about 80% of the time it takes for everyone to finish a turn.. To my knowledge diety has NEVER told another player other then you that he's slow and to hurry up and finish his turn. No one wants to sit there being bored to death, its very discouraging seeing every turn get progressivly longer and longer.
