Played through the tutorial. Started new game and aved when I had to go to work. When I quit the game, it locked up. Is this by chance fixed in the patch?

Yes it is. If you have the Strategy First release then do not start playing without the 1.04 patch. The Strategy First release was virtually a Beta and, IMHO, should not have been released so early.
Apart from many problems that 1.04 fixes any saved games made without the patch probably will not work under 1.04
