Does XP not support Civ 2?

I tried installing Civ 2 and FW on my new computer with XP but I'm getting an error message when I try to start the program. Is this a common problem? Is there a solution?

MGE works fine for me.

... and 2.42 works fine on my daughter's XP laptop -- there have been some problems reported though -- search about 20 days ago here ...

FW & CiC only install with difficulty on NT machines - you need to close down everything except Explorer and Systray before you start the installation - then it goes fairly smoothly (fingers crossed)
