adding new units
Just took a peek at the editor.
There seems to be no way to add new units?
There no "add" button.
Renaming and cancelling doesn't work either.
Does anyone have a clue?

Good patch. I hope I don't find bugs in it though. It gave me something to do in the downtime of Apolyton.

Yeah that was long downtime. If it wasn't for Asher I wouldn't have known about the patch either.

Someone at Civfanatics had the same problem, I think you have to have the cd in the same drive you installed Civ3 from. Or else there was a path in the registry you could change, can't tell you where in the registry though. Check Civfanatics if it doesn't work out for you.

Perhaps, but it seems like a bad idea to me...
Hang on a sec. and I'll try to find that post at Civfanatics for you.
Edit:
Here it is, it is Venger who had the same problem, he seem to have fixed it.

????????
What's happening here?
I've just downloaded from the link above and tried to start a new game:
1) on the main screen there's still 1.17f, no sign of 1.21f
2) I CAN'T START A NEW GAME. THAT OPTION IS DEAD !!!!
(can reload old games though)
WHAT'S WRONG?

Luckily I generally don't use my quad speed. But it is still a nuisance.

I have the CDROM problem, nothing like yours. I don't know what's going on there. It doesn't sound healthy.

Have you tried downloading it from another location? Did the patch seem to install fine at first?
The file should be 8,81 MB (9 248 057 byte).
Edit: Grrr, check my edit of my post above for link to possible fix to your problem.

Yes, it installed fine and was about 8+MB, so that sounds OK.
During installation though I had to use the ignore option 3 times (to replace already existing files I think). I'll download from another place now ...
Thx.

That sounds like it. What did it say and what button did you hit? It could be that three files are still v1.17 and the rest v1.21. Just try installing it again.
(edited for spelling)

Its likely that was the cause of your problem. Have it overwrite the files instead of keeping the old ones. You may need to unintall and reainstall now.
It worked for me. I have a game running in the background right now.

Is there an easy way of reinstalling my last (failed) patch? Downloading again is not an option (tried that).
Does this mean I have to uninstall civ3 completely, reinstall and download patch again?
Thx to all of you.

Where did you download the patch TOO? You should always download to a KNOWN place. Just run the patch again after you find out where you hid it.
I have a folder on my hard drive for downloading
D:\Downloads
And then subfolders for different classes of downloads
D:\Downloads\Games\Civ III
That is where I have the patches. All of them are in there. Also everything else I download for Civ III including
D:\Downloads\Games\Civ III\Other peoples Saved games
Which is where I keep the games of people that have made desperate cries for help.
Forget that advice people often give to download to the desktop. Only do that with something you want to do NOW and never again.

Ethelred,
I've downloaded from the current location (had civ3 running).
I've retried this and hurrah : 1.21f shows on the mains screen, but alas , the new game option still doesn't function.
Again this 'strange' (hey, I'm not a PC wizard ) message occured 3/4 times: I've chosen Reboot option this time
--> 'improvement' as mentioned above, but still dead new game option.
This is the window message that appears:
Locked File detected.
An option you selected requires that files be installed to or uninstalled from your system, or both. A locked file, C:\Program Files\Infogrames Interactive\ Civilization3\Civilization3.exe was found while performing the needed file operation. To leave this file as it is on your system, click the Ignore button: to retry the file operation click Retry; or to perform the operation when your system is rebooted, click Reboot.
I have no clue about locked files. This is the first time ever something like this happens
Anyone?
Thx.
AJ

1. Have you tried uninstalling civ3 and then installing it again?
2. Have you used a no-cd patch erlier? Perhaps the patch installer notices the cracked exe and don't install.
3. If nothing else works, write down the names of the files in the error messages, then uninstall civ3. Install civ3 again, then delete the files you wrote down, then run the patch. (before you try this you should try to uninstall civ3, install it again, and run the patch directly, that's what I ment with 1.)
Edit: Do you have Civ3 running when you install the patch? Close Civ3 down, then install the patch.

Thanks to all for the good advices.

OK lets start again. This a bad way you did that.
TURN OF CIVIII. Do not have it on. Its actually OK to have it on while you download but you have to turn it off to run the patch.
Now I assume you actually know where the patch is presently stored on your hardrive.
Turn of all your programs. I tend to leave some on but I know which ones I can get away with. Mostly I turn off everthing but ZoneAlam which I only turn off if I also shut off my DSL connection.
Now that everything is off ESPECIALLY Civ III run the patch. If you get ANY warnings read them carefully and if it is changing things in Civ III say yes. There should be no changes to other parts of you system except some parts of the registry that are specificly for Civ III anyway.
IF you are using Windows XP or Windows 2000 you may need to be logged in as an Administrator. Someone on Civfanitics mentioned they had to be. I am lazy and am always logged on as an admin which I really shouldn't do. I am going to stop that bad habbit when I set up a new PC later this year.
You may need to unistall Civ III if things are messed up enough. If you need to do that I recommend that you copy your save folder to someplace safe first. Not a bad idea to save the high scores either.
However you should be able to simply run the patch and fix things up. IF you have everything off. You may want to reboot the PC before you run the patch just to be sure the system is clean.
All I did was download the patch to the directory I mentioned then I shut down Internet Explorer and Outlook Express just to be sure things went clean. I navigated to the patch in Exporer then I double clicked the patch and it went very clean. I did have the Civ III cd in the drive when I did that just in case it wanted to peek at the CD.
Actually I didn't double click as I have my PC set up for single click.

Thanks Ethelred,
I'm already a master in civ3 micromanagement.
I guess it's never too late to become a micromanager in real life as well , especially concerning pc files. Your suggestions are noted!
