Democratic Despot?
hey all, i know i don't really hang around the democratic game section and whatnot, but i wanted to start a civ3 democratic game before but we decdided to wait a bit (endless patches that completely change the game, etc).
anyway, i was just wondering if the democratic games should really be democratic all the time. i was thinking that the government of the civ would have a bearing on the physical (real) world behind it.
for example, if you were in a democracy, the game would work as it does now. if you were in a monarchy, one person would have absolute rule but could appoint advisors of his own accord. etc.
i think that such a system would make the game a lot more fun, having a president getting elected and then being asked to be called Comrade... i might even run if i could do that

so the leader would be elected but nothing else would have to be democratic. I'm not saying I would support that, but here are my suggestions:
despotism-prez rules all
monarchy-prez appoints advisors who don't have to ask people stuff
republic-prez and advisors elected, but advisors can still ignore people
democracy-everyone elected and leaders must consult people
communism-prez appoints, needs ratification of actions from scared-to-death advisors
fundamentalism-prez renamed god, has total control over both the game and the people's lives
anarchy-prez has no power, anyone can obtain the game and play a few turns then put it back (like an SG)

exactly. i believe such a system would be quite funny / realistic.
imagine being elected to a Despotism, but wanting to be completely Democratic. You'd have to go through the anarchist period, and lose 6 turns of your pesidency!

Until the military "accidentally" shoots the despot, of course...

Jokes aside, if you play as a despot - paying little heed to the public - you will lose your public and thus the game. You will need to include them in the game somehow for it to work.

Yes, while we are playing the game in a democratic style, it does not work very well if we try and match the other forms of governments the game allows.
