BOANN - Boann is the Celtic goddess of rivers.
she was the wife of
Nechtan, a god of the water. Likewise, Boann was herself a
water-goddess, and one of her myths concerns the water.
legend has it that once the Irish river Boyne did not exist. Instead, there was
only a well, surrounded and overhung by nine hazel-trees bearing the sacred
crimson hazel-nuts of wisdom. No mortal humans, and no gods, not even the
highest gods, were allowed to eat the hazel-nuts. Only the salmon living in
the holy well were given this privilege, and as the nuts fell into the water, the
salmon would eat them and immediately know all things.
Only Boann, a curious goddess, dared to approach the sacred well, and as she did so,
the waters roiled and rose up, overflowing the pool and rushing at Boann in mighty
waves. Boann ran swiftly and escaped, but the waters continued to rush out upon the
land, creating the river Boyne, named after the lady Boann.
The wise salmon were washed out of their well by this catastrophe and to this day, they
swim up and downstream searching in vain for their hazel-nuts.

I have explained this name something like three times already... but pleased to serve . A few years ago, some weeks before registering to Apolyton, I had decided to be imaginative and create the pun "LightEning" - I can't actually remember if it had any special meaning in its conception, but anyway, I explained it to myself by this phrase:
Quote:
|
Seeking enlightenment.
Lightning fast.
|
Fortunately, over time, people have learnt that the "typo" is intentional - but it has really taken its time...
I have also thought of switching to using my real name, Ari Rahikkala, around here, since that's what I use on ezboards, and since I would like to see all the imaginative misspellings of my last name...

Georges Guynemer, a French fighter pilot in WWI. I first learned of him when I bought the old flight-sim classic Red Baron, which I played for years. Guynemer's story really fascinated me, and I identified with him quite a bit.

Spartak after the Football team I support - Moscow Spartak.
Spartak is a simplification of Sportivniy Klyub or Sports Club.
Previously I was Gasmaske as a joke connected to the Gasmaske smilie at ACoL. Before that I was andye - which wasn't the slightest bit imaginative.

I took my name from the main character in William Gibson's book 'Neuromancer'
At the time that I picked it I was operating under the mistaken belief that I was going to become a computer programmer [my first year of university crushed that illusion ]

I was not in a creative mood when I created my current and only, screen name for my Apolyton registration.
Even though it's not creative, I guess it suits my personality alright.

There was once a reggae-dance hybrid artist in around 1995. He only had one famous song, whose lyrics didn't make sense, but it had a cool beat. His name was . . . Mr. President!!
In addition, there used to be a little in-joke in my social group at my old school. I was the only American (indeed, the only foreigner) in a Tasmanian high school. Just about the only thing they knew about America is that it has a President. I was American, hence I must be "Mr. President", one of my friends was the Vice-President, and so forth.

Way back in the dark ages of the Internet, before the advent of web browsers, the net was a primitive, cold, UNIX-type world. User IDs (at least for my ISP) were case-sensitive and could only be a max of eight characters. I've used this ID for various things ever since.

You have the coolest screen-name on Apolyton, Felch X.

You wouldn't say that if you knew what "felch" meant in gay slang. I snicker every time I see Felch X's name.

Dude, I know exactly what felch means. I thought for sure he was going to have to change his name when he first created it (I posted this in one of his very first threads too).
I, too, snicker every time I see "Felch X" as a poster in a thread. That's why he's got the best screenname on Apolyton.

He should be thankful the mods are so clueless with the slang terms these days. But now that so much attention's been drawn to it he's in for it.
