I took a course on Alexander the Great in college, and the author of the history of Alexander we used was Flavius Arrianus Xenophon. He did a lot more than just write that book, actually, but that's what I remember him for. I was greatly impressed by his work, particularly his critical analysis of his sources. So I started using Arrian (the shortened, anglicized version of his name) as my name in CivII, when playing as Rome.
When I decided to register here and at CivFanatics, it was the first thing that came to mind.
-Arrian

you're not, mrfun... you're just trying hard to get into that posiiton, which is why every post or yours (and that's quite a few) must contain at least 3 accusaitons against other posters of being homopohobe as well as 2 gay jokes, 1 gay porn pic and 3 essays on the position of gays in society
just kidding

you get the feeling from some, but that is surely because they need to have a certain attitude in order to survive in a society where they face people opposing their very nature every day. I don't know too many of the sort, but at least one of them I meet on a regular basis (well, bisexual; and it's only now and again but what the heck) and he is sort of the same, just not as obsessed as MrFun though

I'm Flemish and used to be a Civ2 map maker = Mercator
I use it pretty much everywhere else (which isn't too many places)
If Mercator is already taken, I pick Ortelius (another Flemish cartographer)...
I also use creMator one place, it's simply Mercator with the first 4 letters in reverse, and it happens to be an actual word too (with a cruel touch).

MrFun rarely brings up the topic of homosexuality. Just as in this topic, someone else usually brings it up - and then when he comments on it, people say that he brings it up all the time.

To be quite real, I've seen him bring it up pretty often lately. But then I don't read all threads, not even half of all. Though I don't choose my threads on a basis that would explain the relatively high amount of those... well, 'incidents'.. anyway, he's not being agressive nor threadjacking other people's debates by that (or? ), so it should be fine... to each his own I say (especially before some hateful people call me homophobe )

It's a male version of Pauline Hanson, the far-right Australian politician whom I respect a great deal...:
Of course not. It is, infact, my name. Any similarities to that of Ms Hanson are purely coincidental.

It's from Spaceman Spiff in Calvin & Hobbes.
It fitted to the first game I played with a nickname (Chrono Trigger allowed only 5 letters to name the caracters in).
And Spiffor simply because I didn't like calling me Spiff2112 or something on the 'net. So far, i've never seen any other Spiffor.

Some cool stories about how various people chose their names.... Good thread!
As for me...I had a little help from Jose Cuervo with mine. I used to be a member of a local ISP, and said company would host monthly gatherings for its members. So, I was in the back of the bar drinking with the owners and trying to come up with a new name to use on their service. Got messing around with word sounds in my head, and really seemed to be focusing in on the letter "v" and the words "velociraptor" and "velocity."
Added in a few twists and mutations while combining the two together, and it wasn't long till I came up with something I liked.

Originally it was Zoltan Pepper, from a character in Vonnegut's book "TimeQuake" (hilarious book BTW ).
Then I contracted it into Zopper, I added the "-oni" after that (Pepper --> Pepperoni --> --> Zopperoni)
So there you have it

Well, my nick comes from my first name (Alexandre) plus the rest (hence "n" and "m"). Only after I registered here on Poly I noticed that my nick sounded like Alex Enema I want to change it, but I don't know how (and I think forum rules do not allow that).

That's strange - I never noticed the 'oni' untill you pointed it out, I've always read your name as 'Zopper'.

Anyone remember that old '60s tv show called "Rat Patrol"?
It was about these 4 allied soldiers (3 american and 1 british) who road around in jeeps armed with 50 calibre machine guns in North Africa fighting the Germans in WWII. Every battle they got into resulted in many german tanks and halftracks getting blown up from the Rat Patrols super machine guns. It was quite comical actually but an entertaining show none the less.
Hauptmann Dietrich (played by Hans Gudegast) was the Rat Patrols arch enemy. He was the Afrika Korps captain that could just never beat the good old rat patrol boys.
Bet nobody ever saw this show but it was one of my childhood favourites.

Yeah, that's me graduating in 1999. Are you preparing some kind of CIA file on us all Andy?
