Why can't we add Eras?
I've been wanting to add new Eras to my modified game like the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, etc., but I can't do it! Why not? Is there just too many other things connected with the eras? i.e. era splashes, cities icons, etc.?
One more thing, in version 1.21, they said we could add as many resources as we wanted because they changed something in the program... but it still crashes for me when I open the city view! Is there anyway to get around this I might have missed, or is it just that Firaxis has fixed one problem and created another?

Well, if Firaxis let you add too much in the editor, there'd be no point in buying civ4!

I think the eras are hard-coded into the game. For example, upon entering a new era, the game searches each unit for era-specific graphics in a pre-defined directory. So I don't think adding eras will be that easy.
Hopefully they will fix resources, though, as many mods have added extra resources in only to find they didnt work.

To mush hardcoded stuff (mainly the sci screens)
The unit folders uses the eranames, so that's no problem, and the ERASplashes are from pediaicons.txt.

Of course what I'd like is "manufactured" resources.. i.e. resources that don't appear as natural commodities on the map but rather require an improvement in order to get them... that's wishful thinking I think though...

I want alternative resources, and it would be possible to do if there just were an option to not show a unit in the Tech tree and civilopedia.

hi ,
yep , that would be good , and more resources , as a whole .
and mayby an extra era and extra units and buildings , and some blanks , so that "we" the players can fill them in , ......
"G" , look , why dont we start to work on no 4 ? , huh , next time you go on holiday , let me know , so , we can talk about it , if you want .
for real , the first paragraph , thats what they should do !!
say , gramphos , how much is on the disk , i mean when you buy it , would their not be some "things" on it , but we just cant "see" them now ?
remeber the "chat" , i would say that their would be all ready some "things" on it , huh this is just speculation , but , it could be , ...........

I remember one of the hacked editors had the Eras "add" option opened... I assume that it would have just crashed any game with a new era?

hi ,
well , nothing is impossible , i mean we put a man on the moon , invented the MAC and put a man on the bottom of the ocean .
so , if one would put his shoulders under something it works , ...
ahem , i understand your point of view and agree , but we can do one thing ; e-mail all the bugs to them , that way one would know that he did go behind the call of duty , .........lol
and when the final version is there , ya have no bad dreams ,....
have a nice day
oh , believe in a product , no matter how bad ;
in the end it shall work , someone famous , .....;

Because the game would give you this fish stare, then disable your fan and overheat your computer for the fun of it.

I hate all of that hardcoded stuff to.. But, in that .bic source you posted, I saw one of the data structs/records (somewhere in there) had "Number of Eras".
It looks like you could add one, but if the Sci. screen is hardcoded ([0..3] eras)... (unless you were to make a patch to override the value - extensive knowledge of assembler and patience required! ), you might be about to.
BTW, Graphmos, Is there any source/data layout for the .sav files?
I saw the one thread (from someone over at civfanatics.com).
I figured out where I few where.
Oh, and for the Culture values (it was in the .BIC source, but it seems similar), I know one of the middle values (with a '?') is the total culture - seems like a signed double.
