Morrowind vs. Neverwinter Nights
I don't really care for RPGs much, but maybe a really great game will change my opinion of the genre.

Is one of these games that game?

Both are extremely promising. You can never tell with previews, they all say the game is the best thing since warm butter.

So you need to wait.

I'm not too familiar with Neverwinter Nights (is there a precursor to it?), but I thoroughly enjoyed Daggerfall and Arena (the precursors to Morrowind) even though Daggerfall was infamously buggy (although I'm confident that Morrowind will not be very buggy, since Bethesda has professed to have learned its lesson and the game is being simultaneously released on X-Box (a platform that does not so easily allow for bug corrections as the PC platform)). I'm definitely looking forward to Morrowind, and will consider NWN after I've digested Morrowind for awhile.

Since I don't like the D&D system, I'll give Neverwinter Nights a skip.

I prefer more "traditional" settings, and I am a big fan of the Forgoton Realms setting in particular, so Neverwinter Nights is deffinately the one for me.

I'll still give Morrowind a try, but I don't expect alot out of it like I do with NWN.

After recent events in the tbs genre I'm seriously hoping its going to be a contest between which is the better game rather than which is the worst.

I know a bit more about NWN and like the concept but wish the overall gameplay was going to be more like that in BG2.
Morowind I'm undecided on as yet.

so it's really Baldur's Gate 3 you want then, Rav

both these games look very promising and i'm hopeful that at least one of them will be great, but i'll wait for several weeks after release before i buy either of them ... games seem to be hyped-up before release a great deal these days, even more so than usual.

Being down-under I have no choice but to wait for several weeks anyway, until the Yanks/Euros have beta-tes, er, tried them out first.
A fact I never really appreciated, but it saves a lot of time/money when others are pulling the weeds out of the game garden before the garden comes to you.

I like that way of thinking about it.

Another thing... I don't know what the Morrowind community is like, or what the game's multiplayer capabilities are - But, Neverwinter Nights is promising a really great online-roleplaying platform, and it's likely to be the closest yet to a real roleplaying experience on the computer.

I really don't know much about Morriwind, just heard about it from others. I am looking forward to Neverwinter Nights, although I'm not sure how that gameplay will be. I haven't really checked out any previews yet. Yes I would like a baldur's gate 3 . but of course the game needed a new engine and graphical improvement. That is what I'm hoping neverwinter nights is.

See, that's the thing. The premise is completely silly: they are trying to re-create the paper-and-pencil style RPG on the computer.

Isn't this re-inventing the wheel?

I guess the whole premise of computer games is silly - I mean they're just games, right? simply 'reinventions of the wheel'.

I think you are just looking for an excuse to not like it.

I believe the difference comes down to what you want. Morrowind is aiming to be the best ever single player single character RPG. So its aiming to be a fully immersive experience with immense plot for one player. NWN is aiming to be the best ever online party based game (although a 1pg is now added on). Both are coming with complete scenario design tools but in NWN those tools will become fundamental to the success of the game once everyone has played through the basic game enough. If enough fans really do quality work then either could be awesome.

I am not going to tell you how silly you are.

I don't need an excuse not to like it. I don't need a reason to prefer bananas over strawberries.

Now stop forcing other people to like the things you like.

I'm not forcing anyone to like anything. But that is a stupid thing to say. Yeah, they are trying to re-create table top RPGs on the computer, but it's never be done before - and it's not like their game design and engine even remotely resembles anything out there. I don't see how you can call it a "reinvention of the wheel".

Is civilization a mere 'reinvention of the wheel' because it was inspired by a board game, or was not the very first turn based strategy game ever created?
