Maaaaaaaaaaaarky
Ditch the ActiveX-virus type thing on your popup. What do you take us for, idiots?
And why do they pop up in a little "hidden" window? Do they track what we're visiting and report it back to home base?
Why does Apolyton's popups want to install "Movie Networks Direct" by "Great Net, Inc" on my computer.
GRRRRR.

Pop-ups don't bother me anymore, since I turned off every single freaking dumb-ass java, javascript and Active X option I could find.
My surfing experience is much more enjoyable, now.

Fine then, I'll just squelch your damned popups if you're going to be an ass about them.
Two can play at this game.
And you know what? I bet everyone else will squelch them too. Figure it out.

How come I never get any pop-ups?
Is it because I jump straight to forums and not the front page?

Maybe also because you don't have your style sheet set to special. You can choose to have 2 ads on each page or one, and a popup on the main page.

Asher,
since you find the pop-ups horrible, i took the liberty to switch your style to the (non-special) default.

I don't have a problem with popups, I have a problem with the virus-style ActiveX that your popups want me to install. I was fine with regular popups, but when they start wanting to put unknown programs on my computer I get REALLY pissed off. It also had a tendancy to launch a "hidden" popup, doing God knows what.
Put up NORMAL popups, not this warez/porn-site style popup. Christ Mark...

it's good that you're starting to discuss instead of shout.
again, we do our best to find the... gentlier ads there out there. for the time that they exist on this site, if you have a problem with the specific pop-up you can always not use the special style.
beyond that, objection noted, but please drop the hysteria

I can see everyone getting pissed off about the stupid ActiveX thing. It's a very dirty tactic. Disgusting if you ask me.
Sites that have such ads (especially in popups) are the lowliest of low sites, and now you've added Apolyton to that listing and you don't seem to care.

The "Popunder attempting to run ActiveX" thing is very much in vogue at the moment, just as floaty Java popups where a while ago and Popups embedded in banner ads were for a while. (You hardly see either of those any more.) My prediction as to the next vogue among unscrupolous internet advertisers: Pop-ups that force you to view the page while they're loading, so you only get to see them (or close them) once they're done, like those at the-underdogs.org (at each individaul game page).

The worst was a pop-up that wouldn't allow you to alt-f4 it. It came up with a windows thing saying I had to close it using "the close button". Whatever - it shouldn't be able to do that (at least I don't think so...).

It lets programs be installed on your computer when you click "Yes" on that pesky dialog box asking if you trust the program doing it.
Many times virus programs and spyware are installed like that (CometCursor, etc). I have NO idea what that popup was going to install, but hidden-popunders with ActiveX things are ALWAYS bad.
And I find it disgusting Markos isn't doing anything about it.
It is NOTHING like DirectX.

The imposing pop-up ads have been removed.
When we signed up for the service at the provider that served us the pop-ups in question, there was no indication that the issues that have been raised in this thread would result from their advertisements; since they have, however, we are now no longer affiliated with the said service. We investigated the matter in as timely and efficient manner as possible, and so far the new pop-up ad provider fortunately does not appear to be conducting itself in a similar fashion.
If you have any similar concerns in the future, please do not hesitate to file a civily-worded and styled complaint with as much detail as possible and we will look into the matter at the earliest opportunity.

So we are getting better popups now? That is good. I still think I'll stick to the normal stylesheet.

Can someone explain this to me in plain English. I get the idea that there are pop-up windows that secretly install programs into my computer. That's rather scary. How do I prevent this from happening.

webwasher is a free program that filters out popup windows, among other things.

From what I understand:
When you get a popup that looks like this:
Clicking yes will install the program on your computer. You've got to be careful because you can get spyware, etc. installed on your system. Under Internet Options/Security/Custom level you can set your activex controls to either enable, prompt, or disable "downloading ActiveX controls".
