But then I realized they serve a real purpose. Like they say that your actual words are only a small part of the message, and people get more from your tone and even your body language than the words themselves.
Smilies are a way to convey tone in an all type message. That serves a valuable and real purpose.
However I understand ... I can see how it might be hard for a hulking manly REAL MAN to use them. I still don't like to myself. Just remember it makes your communication weaker.
I'm guessing the miserable maggot thing is a joke given the context of the thread ... ha ha ha

That is too funny. The "in crowd" of an internet forum for a computer game. You're doing a good imitation of one of those guys who's self concept is wrapped up in post count and date registered.
Anyway at this point I'm sure you're just trying to get people mad because of the thread topic. A daring experiment who's time has come, or a waste of time? Only time will tell...
Thanks for the laugh though!

Real men eat smilies, or was that real men use quiche ? Maybe smilies ear quiche? My mind's going in my old age.

You guys are funny...
Ok, I'll bow out to the massive post count and the coveted 1969 "Founding Father" registered date ... any submarine guy has to be cool.
Smilies could be less cute. Sometimes they're like asking a guy to buy something bright pink with glitter on it ... enhhh

I'm not big on smilies. I have bad experiences with that tongue-sticking-out smilie, but that's not why I don't like them.

Does this forum bring out my nasty side? Sure, when I'm in the mood to vent a bit of steam. Some people "say" things to me on this and other forums that they would never have the guts to say to my face, and from time to time (when my fuse has been sufficiently shortened by lack of sleep) then I'll call them out on it. It's also easier for people to be obtuse when they're online--or rather, it's tougher for me to tell when I'm dealing with a complete ****ing moron when they're online, whereas in real life I'm much quicker at determining whether or not somebody came out of the shallow end of the gene pool. If I'm looking for some ******* to vent on, there's no better place to find one than a public forum.

I think that pretty much says it for me. Its not heated arguments that set me off, its the one-liners from some dweeb who hasnt bothered to read the posts.

Hell yes. I just stay out of the asylum by remembering, that it's Kass they are pissed off at, not *me*.
What comes to usage of smilies, there are occasions where they are needed, and occasions when they are not. If you are communicating with someone you are not that acquainted with, smilies are a resource, but for example in the Suomithreadi, our sarcasm can make it's way through without such instruments.

Didn't the Village People have a song about the navy? What did it say exactly? Something about men doing each other on a sub, right? Kinda like that one they had about the Y, I think.

This forum doesn't exactly bring out the worst in me. I simply watch it with interest, learn a few things and have a bit of a laugh at some of the petty arguments I see here. I occasionally post a comment, add my thoughts to the argument and explain my point of view.
But I'm the sort who avoids getting angry. Oh anger is so futile. Even with the tendency for people to be more blunt on this than in person, I can't possibly get angry and invoke a burning rage.
