Would anyone want to do this?
Over on the Roller Coaster Tycoon site I visit some people pass a park around for a group effort thing as far as building goes.
Perhaps a group playing a CIV game would be fun. One person starts, plays a number of years, passes it on to the next person and so on. Anyone done that here yet??
Anyway... would anyone want to? I find myself getting a little burned out on CIV and unable to finish a game. So this might be another fun way to play.

Sounds like a plan. I already do that with SimCity...or at least I used to, don't play that too much anymore.
CivII isn't the same as Sim though...
And of course the people in the modern times will have more work than the people playing the ancient times. And strategy might have to be agreed upon, or you'll have someone taking over a civ, making it great, then the next guy screws it up...but that does sound like it adds an element of successorship to it.

Now see. That's a good post Mao. I knew you could do it.
Well... if anyone wants to we'll start a list of names. Post if you want to and we'll setup some date ranges.

Sounds like a nice idea MWHC. I would be into it. I think it would have to be done so strategies wouldn't be agreed in advance to make it more like a real succession. I guess something like 'We'll win by AC' could be settled on up front though.
Which version would be played though?
I have CivII+ whatever the most recent patch is and I would fancy buying MGE or whatever just for this.

I'll play a few hundred years. Each person when they finish their regine should write up a brief history of what they did, and what they planned, the conditions and ideals for the section they played.
This would be an awesome idea.

Great idea, MWHC! I request a time slot early in the game - my nightmare would be managing 200 cities from 1980-2000 while the spaceship makes its flight...

alright, I came up with the idea so someone make the time ranges based on how many people we have now (and probably a couple of extra). put me in there anywhere.

I think it would better it were regularly rotated rather than you run it from 4000-1000,you 1000-1-you 1-500 etc.Something like 10 turns then send it on.

Smash - good idea, but 10 turns is a little quick in the early game, where not much is happening. How about 20-25 turns for everyone's first time in the driver's seat, then 10 turns from there on?

Something like that.A constantly changing face may add some fun to it.
One player might ics for their 20 turns.A perfectionist might be next followed by someone who gets involved in military conflict.I can see each player cleaning up the previous players "mess"
note-I don't think I should get involved as cross platforming may get too complicated for you pc users

I was thinking of something longer than 20 turns... I play 20 turns in about 20 seconds.

How about something like this (with suitable changes for more or less than 10 players)?
4000BC-3050BC (20 turns) Player 1
3000BC-2050BC (20 turns) Player 2
2000BC-1050BC (20 turns) Player 3
1000BC-525BC (20 turns) Player 4
500BC-25BC (20 turns) Player 5
AD1-AD280 (15 turns) Player 6
AD300-AD580 (15 turns) Player 7
AD600-AD880 (15 turns) Player 8
AD900-AD1180 (15 turns) Player 9
AD1200-AD1480 (15 turns) Player 10
AD1500-AD1600 (10 turns) Player 1
AD1600-AD1700 (10 turns) Player 2
AD1700-AD1758 (10 turns) Player 3
AD1760-AD1778 (10 turns) Player 4
AD1780-AD1798 (10 turns) Player 5
AD1800-AD1818 (10 turns) Player 6
AD1820-AD1838 (10 turns) Player 7
AD1840-AD1854 (10 turns) Player 8
AD1855-AD1864 (10 turns) Player 9
And et cetera, till end of game

MGE saves can not be loaded by earlier versions. I don't know about CIC/FW. So everyone involved should play with the same version. I would be interested in playing, but I don't have much time right now. Maybe in the christmas vacation.
I agree with MWHC about the early turns. They don't take much time. But on the other hand, if the first player plays too many turns the game could be almost over by the time the next player gets to play.

Even though this wasn't my idea I'd be willing to start the game. How does this sound:
King, large map, v1.3 MGE, level 3 barbs (1 lower than raging hordes),
4000BC-3050BC (20 turns) CornMaster (Player 1)
3000BC-2050BC (20 turns) My Wife Hates CIV (Player 2)
2000BC-1050BC (20 turns) Mao (Player 3)
1000BC-525BC (20 turns) Empress (Player 4)
500BC-25BC (20 turns) johnmcd (Player 5)
AD1-AD280 (15 turns) Scouse Gits (Player 6)
AD300-AD580 (15 turns) DaveV (Player 7)
AD600-AD880 (15 turns) Smash (Player 8)
AD900-AD1180 (15 turns) kcbob (Player 9)
AD1200-AD1480 (15 turns) Paul (Player 10)
AD1500-AD1600 (10 turns) Player 1
AD1600-AD1700 (10 turns) Player 2
AD1700-AD1758 (10 turns) Player 3
AD1760-AD1778 (10 turns) Player 4
AD1780-AD1798 (10 turns) Player 5
AD1800-AD1818 (10 turns) Player 6
AD1820-AD1838 (10 turns) Player 7
AD1840-AD1854 (10 turns) Player 8
AD1855-AD1864 (10 turns) Player 9
etc.....
So what do you think? If anyone would want this list changed or edited just post another message and I'll change it. The players are just from the people that showed interest in the idea and are not set in stone.

This does sound intriguing. I have a couple of questions, though.
How would you pass the game from player to player?
On what difficulty level would you play?
Random world and other settings?

You just email the saved game to the next player. It could also be posted after each update so everyone could look at it.
I still think 20 turns is a bit light for the early game.
I guess game version would be the only real problem. What does everyone run with? I don't think the patch makes a difference with SP mode.

I will start. But I just realized that some sneaky player could slip a virus into the file and infect all the players. Do you know how we could avoid this? And how will we get it from player to player? ICQ or E-mail?
But I will start the game now.

Ok will I just finished the first 20 turns. 2 minutes. A lot quicker than I thought. Anywho I'm ready to pass it on. How should I get it to you MWHC.
By the way, I have 2 cities and 2 warriors with 1 settler on the way in Apolyton (Capital) and 1 Phalanx coming in Civ2-MP Forum. I know lame city names but I'm tired. Also we are the Apolytoners of Team Apolyton!!!

I think the best way to send the game to the next player is by e-mail. Just use the address in the player's profile unless he says to use an other address. And post here when you have sent it, so that we know where the game is.
And Cornmaster, I don't think you can put a virus in a Civ2 saved game, so I wouldn't worry about that. And you said that you started in MGE v1.3. So if anyone doesn't have MGE they should let us know, because in that case they can't play.

Mine's the strange UK Multiplayer 5.3.0f Patch 2 - which I think is compatible - if it doesn't work I'll simply hand off to DaveV

Well praise the Lord for small favors!
I look at the list of players, see I'm followed by Paul, and the first thought that goes through my head is "What if it's an OCC game?"
Fortunately, the first game played by The Apolytoners of T&A (did I get that right? ) is not going to show my short comings to the master.
I'm still unsure as to whether it's going to be zipped or not. Is an unzipped file to unwieldy? I guess we'll find out somewhere along the line. Also, as to posting the game after our turn, where would we do that? I don't have a web site. Where else might this be accomplished? I guess I could let Smash and Paul cover for me in that regard. They're going to be doing that in the game itself anyway. Then again, be positive, right?
Into the breach! Or do we have one yet?
BTW, Smash. My email address is kcbob49@hotmail.com.

SG[1], do you have the latest patch installed for your version? At http://support.microprose.com/civii.htm you can find patches for Gold, Classic and MP (non Gold or Classic). I assume the latter is the version you have.
As far as uploading the game to a website is concerned, I think that would be a good idea. That way we could have a look at how the game is going in between our own turns. If one of you doesn't have a website you can mail it to me and I'll put it on my site. Or maybe we should have all the intermediate saves on one site instead of every player's own site?
By the way, my e-mail is paulvdb@home.nl
