Scientology was originally the religion in one of L. Ron Hubbard's novels (I think it was Battlefield Earth.) It was only later he decided to try to make a real religion out of it.
Can you imagine what would happen if someone tried to make a religion out of Heinlein?

Small religions: Scientology. A hillarious prank somehow gone horribly wrong when people actually believed it. A religion based around making money for the church and the stupidest story of the universe ever.
Large religions: I'll agree with Snapcase and say Hinduism, the religion that seems designed to keep the low low and the high high. Then again, Kautilya has disputed me before on this and I agree I'm not an expert, so I'll restrict my statement to classical Hinduism not modern.

And aren't the Crusades a kind of way to be at their doorstep by the time ?
And is Inquisition anyhow related to Islam ?

Christian Science! I've lost members of my family due to this religion including my mother. They don't belive in any type of medical assistance not even taking an aspirin or coffee.
When we lived in Germany we were called home to the States to be with my dying Grandmother. She was the Matriarch of the family and this whole belief system. I loved my Granny with all my heart and she is the only person I've ever really seen this religion work for, but if you ask me it was simply because she was a person with a kind and loving spirit who chose not to listen to anything negative in her life.
I digress.......when we got home to San Antonio she'd had a heart attack and was fading fast. After two days of sitting vigil and walking her around the house to keep her stimulated she finally agreed to allow her daughter to fix her some strong coffee. My Aunt made it like mud and after two pots of the stuff she wasn't grey anymore and began to get color back from the coffee stimulation. But was determined that no one in her church find out.
My mom......well unfortunatly her faith killed her. No question in my mind. While she was raised Christian Science when she got married and after I was adopted she and my father (who was Baptist) decided they needed a religion to raise me in together as a compromise. They choose Methodist. This is how I was raised and my Mother had gotten completely away from Christian Science. Unbeknownst to my father and me while I was in High School my mother and gotten very ill and had a tumor on her ovaries. Long story short she decided to go the Christian Science route even though she hadn't been practicing it for years.
My Uncle who was a devote CS paid us a visit. If you were to look at my mother it looked like she had two pillows under the covers. This was the tumor that had massed in her stomach. We had finally talked her into going to the hospital and I pick my Uncle up at the airport and told him that she was going to the hospital he walked into our home and claped his hands and told my mother the healing was taking place. A month later when we finally got her to go she had 75 lbs. of fluid drained out of her stomach before they could even get to the tumor. It had massed itself up in a ball on her insides and weighed almost 85 lbs. It had basically eaten her up.
So in my book a religion that doesn't allow you to do anything to help yourself or save your own life when you have a family and people who love you and depend on you......well to me that religion just sucks!

PS I'm not really a satanist. I just like to say I am. It's a mental disorder I have . I just think satan is cool. That came from listening to too many heavy metal records. And looking at the pretty album covers. You kids stay away from heavy metal if you know what is good for ya.
As for Indulgence I'm all for it. But as with any religion, you have to stay within the confines of the rules and laws society sets. Because without rules and laws we have anarchy. And despite what many punk bands would have you believe, anarchy is no cup of tea. It's hard to indulge in the pleasures of the flesh when you are dead.

I don't have that problem because I can't find enough women to indulge with. I'm going for a foursome with 3 women, but that is hard to accomplish .

Everything should be taken in moderation, including moderation. The occasional indulgence does a body good.

Just because I am a non-conformist Christian, does not mean that I look down on other religions.
My own Christian beliefs best suits me for my life and my values. But if someone chooses Islam for instance, as the religion because that is what works for them the best, that is great for them.
What I do not believe in, or what I do not pratice, does not necessarily mean they are worse, or bad.

religion causes more wars than does territory.

So the question is "what is the best/worst religion?"
I've been doing some reading these past few days that really apply to this topic. In this discussion we've looked at nothing but the differences of various religions. But have you ever looked at their similarities?
The book I'm reading is called "The Story of B" (written by Daniel Quinn) and I would really recommend this to anyone. It is eye-opening at times.
Anyways, in it, the author says that all of our religions are really one. All bring us the same message: salvation. If we repent for our sins, we will be admitted into heaven. If we do not, off to hell we go. Religions tell us that we can save ourselves, but that no one can do it for us.
Funny enough, the first post about Satanism included this statement:
"each person is their own redeemer, fully responsible for the direction of their own life. "
Sound familiar? Only YOU can save yourself, no one else can.
Now I'm not sure if I'm really explaining this well, but the point is that one religion isn't really worse than any other. They are all, more or less, alike. If you want a clearer explanation, I think you'd need to read the book. It is really quite interesting.
Anyways... those are my thoughts
Julia

DinoDoc, let's be more fair and realistic.
Christianity, Judahism, Islam, Buddahism, and Hinduism. And a few others not mentioned.

While all religions contain some truth, I would say that Christianity is the best.

So are you saying that all beliefs are equally good (or unbad)? Because I disagree--there are some sets of beliefs that are downright wicked and/or irrational.

What I am saying is this:
I believe that all beliefs that affirm humanity and respect for humanity, are equal.
Now, some beliefs obviously would not fall into my sphere of respect.

Each person's life is different from the next person.
A person who chooses a religion based on positive affirmation of humanity that best fits with their life, their values, and their experiences, is the right religion for them. Whether that be Christianity, Islam, or some other religion.
Fundamentally, all religions based on positive affirmation of humanity are equal IMO. They can all do as well as any religion -- the question is, which one do you choose for yourself??
