Why can't we attach mp3 files?
It seems like an oversight. .wav files are allowed, but I compressed my attachment to mp3 format as a courtesy (not to waste too much server space). I then had to zip it because I get a message saying that mp3s aren't valid attachments.

I agree, MP3 should be attachable.

I was wondering why you posted it as a wav.
That would be the reason.
mp3s should be attachable.

The zip file doesn't actually have any worthwhile benefit though, the music is already compressed. The easiest way is to rename it to .wav

Something very odd happened to me this a.m.
1. I was cruising the Civ2 area, just normal thread-lurking.
2. For no apparent reason, a tune starts emanating from my PC speakers! Electronic keyboard, kind of a cheesy upbeat pop carnival national anthem vibe. And I can't turn it off! All I could do was to turn it down with the external volume wheel.
3. Tune plays for about 2 minutes, ends.
4. Roughly 15 minutes later, I've moved on to this forum and see this thread.
Coincidence or evil plan ?

I agree with the sentiment.
I too often felt necessary to post bits of sound and since wav files are allowed, why not post MP3s which are smaller?
It's not like we're going to illegaly trade copyrighted material using 500KB files

Yes, there are much better ways to illegally trade copyrighted mp3s

Since this oversight is discovered, I strongly suggest the admins to close the hole by disallowing wave files.
Everybody can handle compressed files, right? Right.

Why not just disallow all file formats other than gif, jpeg and zip then?

But what happens if you are giving someone a graphical demonstration on how to unzip files, for instance?

Now you're just being contrary SB (as if I only just noticed)
If filetypes other than .zip are to be permitted I see no problem with mp3...
Vaguely on topic - can .ra and/or .rm files be played without that d*mn spyware monstrosity RealPlayer?

No-one has responded to -Jrabbit.... I'm with you there, trusty Historian. At least, if we're crzy, we're BOTH crazy.
Can anyone tell us why in the "When we learn Democracy" thread in the Democratic Civ2 game forum it plays some weird patriotic sounding midi?
Go on, try it. I am NOT crazy.

Mark - when I followed the 'Democracy' link in the post above -
1- I got the redirect screen
2- I was not logged in when I finally got to the forum
This can't be what you intended - can it?

You can rename the MP3 to wav. Windows Media player handles it fine but Music Match Jukebox and Real Audio don't know what to do with it.

Sometimes quality is important. FI: in a help me with graphics situation a bmp may be prefreble.
No! No! NO! NO! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Use PNG, the open source alternative. BMPs are an evil Windows format that should never have been introduced!
P.S. Bill Gates must die, but Senator Hollings needs to die even more.

Whats Canadian have to do with it? They have a Parliment not a Senate.
He is the Senator from South Carolina. The one that is in the pocket of the RIAA.
