Top gaming experiences
Hello All

I'm in a retro mood at the moment and have come across a few "ultimate gaming experiences/achivements" that everyone who considers themselves a gamer should have done. Here's a few examples:

1) Become "Elite";
2) Get all 120 stars in Mario 64;
3) Win Civ 2 on Deity!!
4) Never succumbed to buying a Star Wars game - oh okay maybe there are some good SW games nowadays...
5) Completed Gran Turismo 1 and 2.

What else should be on this list?

Cheers

Paul.

Gotten FTP access to Apolyton.

Beat Gary Kasparov at chess.

Oh wait! That was just a wet-dream.

I can't think of any at the moment. There are quite a few, though.

1) The first time I played Civ 2 around my mates.

2) My first game on Championship Manager

3) The whole experience Deus Ex gave me and especially going through it a second time so that I could put a bullet into Joseph Manderley's head.

4) Completing all 96 levels on Super Mario World

Erm....and others that I can't think of right now.

Fallout II. Pretty much the whole game.

"This one's my dream, and I'm taking it back!"

"I'm here to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and I'm all out of gum."

Etc.

Also, killing Emerald Weapon in FF VII. That bastard used his Air Taim attack on me twice, each time instantly killing two of my fighters and knocking the other down to about two hundred hit points. I still kicked its ass.

Playing through Deus Ex a second time, and actually keeping my 'brother' alive.

In Deus Ex, killing all the MIB + troops who are trying to capture your brother and you. And getting all the way through to the subway.

Ah yes, I forgot about that one. Also, helping Whats-her-name make up with her father, rather than having her run away to California like the first time when I killed her idiot boyfriend. (Sally Jenkins? Sally Dunkins? The chick who was the daughter of the Hotel guy.)

Keeping Smuggler alive, too.

Finding Smuggler the first time you are in NY (playing for the 2nd time), and getting keys to the underground sewers that I missed the first time.

I can't remember her name, I can't even remember the brothers name

Paul: That a very impressive score!

Now that's an achievement.

(Did you get Ruby too?)

Yup, Ruby was almost tougher than Emerald, since I only had one ribbon and one other anti-stone item. I finally killed Emerald by using X-Summon (won from the colloseum) with Bahamot-Zero and Phoenix--Bahamot would do some damage, Emerald would attack, and Phoenix would resurrect my dead characters. Then I'd just mime the combination, and hope that Emerald didn't kill somebody in the middle of the combo (because then I couldn't mime both summons anymore, but would only be miming Bahamot). This didn't work against Ruby, though, because Ruby would turn my guys into stone--Phoenix couldn't help them at that point.

I think I wound up only fighting Ruby with two characters for most of the fight, and let the third sit there as a statue.

Phoenix was awesome!

You didn't use Knights-of-the-Round instead of Bahamut-Zero? And did you use the Mimic (or is it 'Mime'?) ability so that you can use X-Summon twice per round?

If not then much kudos for beating Ruby and Emerald ... i didn't think it would be possible without Mimic at least.

The first time I was crowned King in Defender of the Crown. I did a little dance.

Finally getting to the Codex in Ultima IV. I did it almost 10 years after I first got the game. The first time, I got stuck in a maze and couldn't find my way through.

Getting a triple-rail in a Quake 2 deathmatch.

Completing my first Dr. Creep castle.

Top Gaming Experiences:

1) The first time you ran around like a maniac with the Chainsaw in Doom. I know a lot of the folks here don't like FPS games, but you've gotta admit that this was pretty awesome!

2) Text-based adventures ... all of them ... so many classic moments. Finding a way not to get eaten by the Trolls in the Hobbitt game, but then getting lost for ever in the Misty Mountains.

3) Playing a Sherlock Holmes text game and locking Dr.Watson in a cupboard and running away:
--> E
You go East. You are in a dark cupboard.
Dr.Watson follows.
--> W
You go West. You are in your study.
/me realises that Watson hasn't followed him.
--> shut door
You shut the door.
--> lock door.
You lock the door.
--> down
You go downstairs.

4) playing Pokemon on the GameBoy for the first time. Realising that it's actually quite good. Feeling like you would want to commit suicide if anybody ever found out you liked it.

I only had level 1 KOTR--I was able to use it once or twice (thanks to Mimic), but Emerald broke the chain and I couldn't use KOTR again. That left me with Bahomet.

I didn't have KOTR yet when I fought Ruby (didn't have a gold chocobo).

Quote:

Sure did! I didn't have any Master Magicas when I fought either Ruby or Emerald, so I only had a limited number of summonings I could do. Without Mimic I would have run out of Phoenix summonings without even scratching the surface on the Weapons.

I went back and played the game again recently, but this time I got three mastered Final Attack magicas each paired with a Life magica. Really took the challenge out of the whole business--every time one of my guys died, he'd just come right back to life. Poor Emerald Weapon didn't know what to do...

Yes! Anybody who can complete the whole of Commandos 2 without saving and reloading lots (OK, maybe at the start of each mission) should get a Gold Medal in the Gaming Olympics.

A good game, but a REALLY tough game.

When I was in high school, there were enough people playing that game to have a few multi-player battles, which were quite fun. ice + ground + psychic + electric + dragon + Gyrados forever!

Made a stupid bid in bridge, got set lots of points, and found out our side come out ahead in that round. Since the other side was supposed to be able to make a 6th level contract doubled.

Argh!
So it was you who made that suggestion... bastard
Now I'm going through Thief I, saving only at the end of each mission, and forcing myself to do it at expert level AND get all the gold available in the levels (including the training mission)...
