IIRC, there were some old threads about problems/solutions, perhaps you can find something there.

No problem at all. I'm running XP, and I had to do a grand total of, erm, nothing special to get it working (PP, YMMV).

I can also confirm no problems in running smac/smax on XP, even with the no-cd crack in operation
