The Sensible Majority Believe US And Europe Need To Work Together
Quote:
|
UK Prime Minister Tony Blair says he wants to stop politicians on both sides of the Atlantic from creating a rift between America and Europe.
He told the Times newspaper that the "sensible majority" understood that what the two continents had in common was far more important than what divided them.
He warned politicians on both sides of the Atlantic not to ask Britain to choose between them.

Re: The Sensible Majority Believe US And Europe Need To Work Together
well this is obvious. the US is the most pwerful nation in the world and the EU (if it pulls it's act together and does what its supposed to [or what i think it's supposed to]) will be a close rival.
but if they work together, they wotn eb rivals, they'll be great allies indeed. with the combined money / labor between all the nations of the US and EU, or as i now call it the USEU, we'd have colonies on mars in no time

I wish they'd figure out what's best for their own country for a change. They aren't doing a very good job at it (just look at the economic crises, terracts, anthrax, enron scandal, election fraud, republicans, etc)

I see a lot of anti-American cr*p in this forum. There is very little anti-anything else cr*p. (Save for Israel.)
I think this speaks volumes. Blair is entirely correct in his analysis.

For once I agree with Blair. And he's right: there is a certain element of jealousy when it comes to the US. And why shouldn't there be? America whoops Europe's ass in pretty much every department (although the gap isn't quite as wide as you might think).
Having said this, it would be nice if the Americans would stop rubbing our faces in their superiority every 5 minutes.

Paul,
I think that was Blair's point about politicians on both sides of the Atlantic. His issue with US politicians, IIRC from the article, was that some of them "don't take Europe seriously" or something like that. Translation: quit being arrogant bastards.
Clearly it would be a good thing for both sides if the EU and US made more of an effort to cooperate with one another. This includes handling disagreements as amicably as possible. It's one thing to disagree. It's another to lob accusations at each other.
I'm fairly certain the "don't make us choose" bit refers to Iraq.

Well US superiority is limited to a few fields. But yes, as a rule:
1. if you are superior, thou shalt not blah on and on about how great you are and how much everyone else sucks
2. if you are not superior, thou shalt not blah on and on about how great you are and how much everyone else sucks
As an example for rule 2, America inc. has been bombarding about how great your financial system is. One enron, one Ebbers and several other "incidents" later, there still is the same blah, although more muted and with some *cough* dissent.
Now I can understand why antiamerican noises hit some nerves on your side of the pond, but most of you haven't witnessed the crap we've been exposed to from your side, roughly since the end of the cold war and the collapse of the japanese economic miracle - guess for lack of other proper comparisons for your #1-ism.
Antiamericanism was pretty much the reserve of the wild left and the very extreme right. It has become very fashinable recently, and I do not think that the bulk of the blame for this is with any substantial change in Europe, but rather in America. I'd also point out that the major newspapers usually do not run "fascist americans" op-eds, while eg the Washington Post does not hesitate to bring a "antisemitic europe" op-ed, and similar things in the NYT....
As for Colin Powell or our own Chris## here - "I feel your pain".
