Regardless, check if the following files exist under the main CtP2 folder:

ctp2_data\english\Great_Library.txt,
ctp2_data\default\Newsprite.txt,
ctp2_data\default\Wondermovie.txt,
ctp2_data\default\Victorymovie.txt,
ctp2_data\default\gamefile.txt.

Huh? Oh wait, they should be in the main CtP2 folder, not in modswapper or anything. So, by default, the Great_Library.txt file should be at the location C:\Program Files\Activision\Call to Power 2\ctp2_data\english\Great_Library.txt. Same for the other files, except they should be in default rather than english...

It may sound strange, but I really couldn't find those files in the folders you mentioned (I believe I know what you are talking about). However, I don't have any problem running the program. I can play the normal game with patch 1.1 installed.

Am I screwed?

Locutus, the paths you mean are:

ctp2_data\english\gamedata\Great_Library.txt,
ctp2_data\default\gamedata\Newsprite.txt,
ctp2_data\default\gamedata\Wondermovie.txt,
ctp2_data\default\gamedata\Victorymovie.txt,
ctp2_data\default\gamedata\gamefile.txt.

Economist,
I take it this is the first time you've tried to install modswapper? I had a bit of a mare with it the first time i tried it(can't remember exactly what), so i would suggest ,if your CTP2 game runs fine and the 1.1patch is ok, just try downloading the modswapper file again - read its readme carefully and then try to re-install it. This is basically what i did and second time i had no problem at all. Fingers crossed

What CoT said, try downloading again. All needed files are there and your Windows version shouldn't be a problem, so most likely it's a problem with the file you downloaded. Download, extract to a temp folder, run the setup program.

In case re-downloading doesn't work: when exactly do you get this error? During install, while running it? When exactly: immediately after starting setup/modswapper, after pressing a specific button, while copying the files?

I redownload the modswapper, and reinstall it, still won't work.

To make your job easier, I first list the files in the modswap zip:

setup.exe
setup.lst
MODSWAP.ex_
setup1.ex_
st5unst.ex_
7 different .dl_ files
stdole2.tl_

No readme file there like COT said.

And then when I install, the problem comes when:
after I click the bottom that saids 'to install CTP2 modswapper 1.12 to specified destinated directory'
(notice the path specified is exactly where I installed the program so that should not be the problem)

a pop-up window then comes out that saids:
Visual basic 5.0 setup toolkit
! runtime error '53'
File not found.

Hope that will help you found my problem. Thanks again.

Economist:

Quite simply, you need the Visual Basic 5 runtime library. I'm sorry but I have no idea where to find them on Micro$oft's site, but they can be downloaded there. Probably the easiest thing to do is search a place like filepile.com for the files.

Aha, you're missing VB files. I think the below version should fix the problem, it contains an extra VB starters kit. Let me know if this works. Where did you download the file from?

Attachment too big, try from here.

I tried both Dale's method and Locutus' method. Both couldn't work.

I installed the runtime files, and install both the original file I installed and Locutus' file. Both tries failed.

I guess I am REALLY screwed.

Economist, isnt the problem caused because you installed the game in a different file name. Could you write the path of the files Locutus told you once you find them through the windows find tool?

Pedrunn,

I install the game to the path suggested by the original game. i.e. C:\Program files\Activision\Call to Power 2\

I check the path many times. The files are located correctly. I suspect that the problem is that the setup file somehow detect the wrong path for the files needed for installation. I tried to use my SAS to open the setup.lst file and see what's going on but unfortunately my SAS knowledge is not good enough to detect any problem that appear to occur only for my computer.

I wonder if anyone could easily make the modswapper installation done without using the setup step. Anyway, I hope someone could help because I spend some time and money to get the program but if it's really too troublesome I understand. Afterall it's not official support of the software.

Thanks again.

I attach a zipped version of the executable... Try unzipping to your CTP2 directory and running - you'll likely be missing dll files but it's worth a try if all else has failed.
Attached Files:
File Type: zip modswap.zip (15.5 KB, 2 views)

Did you extract all the files from the zip to your temporary install directory? If you don't have all the setup files there it could cause problems. If that doesn't work, I don't know what the problem could be.

It works fine on my own computer, but I have WinXP. Then again, I never had problems with it when I still had Win98, so that should not be the problem.

Sorry if I can't help more. But there is one thing that could help. The VB5 setup program that I use creates an install log file called ST5UNST.xxx where xxx is usually 000, but it could also be another number. When setup fails and removes the install files it will probably ask you if you want to delete it. Don't delete it. You should be able to find it in your Windows directory. Open it with Notepad and copy and paste the contents of the file here. Maybe it can help solve your problem.

Paul,
If there's no way to have the installer install ModSwapper on Economist's system, what's involved to do it manually? What dll's are required and where should they go? What register settings?

This is the first time I've ever heard of anyone having a problem like this. Modswapper didn't work for me the first time either but I just kept reinstalling it until it worked. I hope things work out; I'm back to the latest version of the Apolyton pack!

Economist,

I bet you have Windows XP and log on with non-administrator account.

Reinstall CTP2 with an administrator-level user account. Install the patch with admin too. Finally install modswapper, also admin level.

The mod files can be installed without admin security level, though.

I believe CTP2 create some registries that requires admin clearance. The same registries both the patch and modswapper requires.

Economist,
I installed CTP2,1.1patch and modswapper from scratch the other day(and superapolyton pack to take part in the tourney!). It was on a different pc than i usually use and guess what.......I had exactly the same problem installing modswapper - i'd download the zip file, open it, select all the contents and extract to the default CTP2 directory. And then when i clicked the modswopper .exe it would come up with an error about file not found etc.
I experimented and got it to work like this:

1. Open the modswapper zip(i had it in the CTP2 directory)
2. double click on the 'install/setup or .exe' file for modswapper(i forget which it is, but the one that looks like it will start the modswapper install)
3. It will automatically install modswaper, and worked no problem!
hope this helps(If you haven't alreadysorted it).
