I do totally agree with roman on everything about having more than 7 civs!!
But I do think that if we flood them with emails, two things would either happen:
1. They listen to what the people have to say about the issue of having 7 civs or:
2. They don't listen to the people since they got flooded with emails!!!
But that is only my opinion!!!
I still commend roman on starting this topic in the forum!!!

Well, I don't think "flooding" Firaxis e-mail is such a good idea. E-mailing them to ask a question, though, that might be worthwhile. In fact, I have already done just that.
Anyway it might be enough if Firaxis sees this thread on the Apolyton boards. Furthermore, it seems from the latest preview that the 7 civilization limit will not be hard-coded after all.
We will have to wait patiently until Firaxis clarifies this issue and some other contradictory information we have from the previews.

Where did you read that review from, Roman?
I have read all of the reviews that I know of and I don't recall any review stating that 7 civs will not be the max!
But I really hope that that review that you read was correct!!!
Because we would all like to have more than 7 civs!!!

I think it was the review from the CGW. However, I haven't read it personally - someone posted an extract here on Apolyton and I only saw it there. I believe it was in Joseph Given's thread.
Yes, I also hope it's true. We can only wait for clarification from Firaxis before we are certain, though.

I ready the review from CGW and I don't think that it said anything about having more civs, but I think that they did mention that in PC Gamer which came out later than CGW. PC Gamer would have been more correct, since they got the latest information on Civ3.
Either way I bet you that Firaxis will either post something on their own site about the issue, or they would put it in another magazine preview!!!
Maybe they saw all the complaints from civers on this topic and decided to allow more civs! But it is still unknown, and we all are still very anxious to find out!!!

some people consider 7civs+1barbarian=8civs. is this what the review about 8 civs is referring to? see, these are the things firaxis needs to clarify *officially*

You might well be right, I honestly cannot remember the name of the magazine, but you can find the extract somwhere on these forums.

My thought on why they are limiting the game to 7 civs is simply perhaps Firaxis's tendency to write games for as low a spec machine as possible so as to extend the circle of potential buyers to as wide as possible. In other words, maybe the game will only require 32MB or even 16MB of RAM. I'm just guessing here, but in that case, couldn't the game be written to allow for more civs if you've got higher specs. This could not only apply to the number of civs, but other things like maximum map size etc. That kind of thing has been done with other games like, for example, Championship Manager where the number of leagues you're allowed to play is dependent on the amount of RAM in your machine.

Yes, this is a good idea, indeed, but I am not sure whether it would not be too difficult to program.

Actually, Russell, you gave me an idea. Perhaps rather than programing the game so that you can only choose more than 7 civs, larger maps, etc. if you have above a certain threshold of RAM, perhaps they could avoid the programming and merely give warnings about it instead.

Minor civs have not been ruled out of the game, yet have they?
So my guess is that Firaxis if including them is planning to have the lowest number of major civs that a low spec computer can also handle minor civs. If they aren't in the game then well I guess the brand new computer I bought last summer to handle Civ III was not needed. Oh well, Black and White was worth it...

The civilization series have always been my favorite games over any other games that I have played. So I would upgrade my computer just to play Civ3!!!
As Roman said earlier about programming more civs isn't than hard, that is true, it doesn't take that much programming.
I think that Firaxis should include more civs, but allow you to choose how many you want, regarding to the speed of your computer. If you had a P4 1.5 Ghz. with more than 256 RAM, then you would want to play with as many civs as you can. Now if you have a P2 200 Mhz. with 32 RAM, then you would play with less civs!

6 pages is a lot of pages!!!
I guess that Roman's topic strikes lots of interest!!!
That shows how many people would like more than 7 civs, and I hope that Firxis listens to each and everyone of them!!!

The forums usually just close threads automatically if they reach about 5 pages and 150 posts. For a long while this thread has been waiting to close. And now all that is left is us bantering about how big this thread is. Weird.

Yes, I expected the page to be closed once it reached five pages, but for some reason it was left open. Maybe a new policy?

Hmm, the new update says nothing about the no. of civs per game or about minor civs. I guess we have to be patient...
