Check your local library, a lot of them (at least in the US) are so scared of being left behind in public funding that they rushed to get the internet so they could keep their budgets

Woo hoo I got the page 7 post! (okay this is a really dorky post, but come on 7 pages is kinda cool)

Well back on topic, the more the merrier with the Civ count, though I do feel that more Civs in the game would string along the development period if they are doing unique-civs (shudders at the thought) due to the need for more intensive game testing and also for a whole new leader an diplomatic animations.

In Slovakia, internet in the libraries??? Unfortunately, they don't even have enough money to prevent the buildings from crumbling...

Well, actually I am pretty sure I will find out somehow (i.e. stop by a newstand and look at a computer magazine).

At this stage I'm pretty sure it's one of 2 things:

1) It's a 7-civ limit and they don't want to disappoint us yet...

2) It's a 7-civ limit but they've seen enough here to reconsider the limit and won't get back to us until they've made the change.

Here's hoping it's #2.

Is this a chat-area or what? If there is no good lengthy arguments left, why not give it a rest?

I don't know. I think everybody has nothing left to say, but I guess the mods are just not wanting to let such a good thread die... It remained serious for quite some time!

Yes, it is indeed starting to turn into a chat area by now. Oh, well at least I can be proud my thread reached such a length. A lot of people posted seriously on many pages past and hopefully this will result in Firaxis at least divulging definitive information on the 7 civ limit and whether there is a way to circumvent it through the text-files.

Bad news again...

Yet another preview seems to be supporting the 7 civilization limit:

quote:

Playing as one of 16 different civilizations, you pit your wits against up to six other computer-controlled nations as you strive to conquer the globe.

Could somebody who is a programer give me an idea (I have never programed anything ) about how difficult it would be to add more civilizations to the game. I would imagine it to be quite complicated at this stage.

My best guesses about the difficulties would be:

The need to rework the displays, graphs, interface, etc. to enable it to show more than 7 civilizations at a time.

The need to add an extra binary digit to all the registries and parts of the program that refer to the civilization limit. Various calculations would probably also be affected and would also need to be modified.

From the above it would be apparent that changing the civ limit at this stage of the game's development would be a very unrealistic proposition. I hope I am wrong in my assesment of the difficulties and would be delighted if a programer put me right and pointed out how easy it would be to change this but this seems unlikely. In fact, it is probably even more complicated than my pathetic assesment above indicates.

Well, it seems more and more likely we will be stuck with the 7 civilization limit after all, though Firaxis did not as yet mention the text files, which are now my last hope.

This is the longest thread I've ever seen...

Perhaps the reason Firaxis is not answering the question is because the number of civs is not set in stone yet. There is still plenty of time for them to change their minds about no. of civs should they feel the need...

Okay, I agree I was not being serious (which I usually am being here).

Here's some serious comment.

It could be that Firaxis is keeping the number of CIV's low because of all the work they have to do on the animated leaders/diplomacy figures.
I don't mind too much. Maybe it's possible to change the names of leaders/countries/cities in the gamedatafiles. Allthough that would give the strange effect that Willem I van Oranje-Nassau may (the founder of the dutch nation) looks like . . . . . Mao Zedong, Abe Lincoln . . . . . . .

Provided the numerical limit is not hard coded into the game then artwork and the unique unit per civ is the limiting factor. However if there is no hardcoded limit to number of civs per game then FIRAXIS could launch with 16 unique civs and up to 16 players per game. That they are not doing so may just be a soft limit to keep testing and processor requirements down but they are saying nothing in case testing reveals that the game cannot cope with more. I expect we will never get a definintive answer to this until the product is shipped and the first mod maker attempts it.

I am rather disappointed in Apolyton having announced a 7 page limit on a forum. How hard would it be for them to have allowed for 16 or even 32 pages? And after so many have indicated a desire for more than 7 pages! Is there a problem with progamming the forum AI? Or is it a machine spec limitation issue? Do these people NEVER listen to us?

Where did Apolyton announce this? That sounds kind of arbitrary, this isn't the OT forum where posts and topics get generated faster then my internet can even load them

yeah well this thread devolved into a whine fest anyway with nothing to do with civ anyway, with some of my help nonetheless, so I'll bring it back to a real Civ3 topic...drumrolls....(can you guess what I'll whine about?)

Concerning my previous post on the 7-page forum limit:
Did you guys not notice the message icon? It's a face winking. What does that mean to you? I've done it to this post as well just so you'd understand...

Seriously, I am sure some of you Apolyton posters are programers. Could you please enlighten me about why it would be so difficult to program the game to run with more than 7 civilizations simultaneously?

I've been getting severe slowdowns on when this thread's updates, as in sometimes I don't even see posts from 2 hours ago, though I've already read them, and I'm on a univ. connection, so it might be connected to that

I don't believe there are no programers on this forum to help illuminate the issue of difficulty of programing more than 7 civilizations. Please somebody expalian.
