So, does that mean before we discovered bridges we couldn't cross rivers? Damn. That sucks. Heh. Have you heard of ferries? Fords? just two options for crossing rivers that are perty basic. Bridges ain't the only way after all.

inventing ferrys before bridges? bridges are pretty ancient, I don't think there'd be too much of a prob with that, and I think its a good idea. its how it should be

In Civilization, the first title, before you discovered Bridge technology, you could still cross rivers, you just couldn't build roads across them.
So I believe you'll be able to cross rivers without Bridge technology, in fact, no technology will be needed to cross rivers.
