Is it just me...
... Or does "Play the World" sound... odd? I just think they could have come up with a better name than that...

I agree wholeheartedly. XP names in general have been quite lame recently. Has anyone seen the name of the Zoo Tycoon XP? It's called "Dinosaur Digs"! That arugably even puts "Play the world" to shame!

I see your point.
You think they could pick something like "Civilization III: The Legacy Continues" or something nifty like that.

Or why not Civilization 3: The Rise of Capitalism, or Civ3: The Conquerers [of our Wallets].
the SMAC XP had a good name, Sid Meier's Alien Crossfire.
And btw, why didn't they call it Sid Meier's Civilization 3? It's the Sid Meier's name on the box that usually tells me it's a good game. It makes it sound as if Firaxis followed the way of Myst 3, and contracted out their game to some company that isn't as good as themselves. not that they did, but it sounds like it from the lack of the trademark title prefix.
EDIT: looked at box and such, it has Sid Meier's. I was just commenting on the lack of it being publicized about with that prefix.

Yeah, "Play The World" sounds like a sports reference to me. Maybe "Endless History" or "Future History" or something like that would have been more topical.

it seems that they wanted to emphasize the mp part. i think the initial title was "Play against the world" which probably was considered too long....

If they wanted to emphasize the mp part, they could have called it "Civilization 3: Beat your Buddies"

Well, considering that you'll have eight new civs to play, the option to play against other players, AND (hopefully) a better editor to create your own custom civs, it doesn't seem entirely inappopriate to me.

Well, at least with Play the World it delivers what it says it does- but it sounds fairly campy- aimed at little children
I prefer Civ III: The Expanison Pack

I agree with -
"Civ 3: The way it should have been"
Its all just a big con to get yet more money out of us. Expansion of their bank balances more like.

Have you seen the "play the world.txt" in the civ3Text directory?

It looks as if their multiplayer server was to be named PTW from the beginning.

Perhaps they should have called it "Civilization 3: Attack of the Multiplayer" or "Civilization 3: TSHBPOTOGBWDWMYBTL(This should have been part of the original game, but we decided we'd make you buy this later)"

more titles
I agree, "Play The World" is probably not the best title possible.
So lets do our own titles, here come some suggestions:
Civ3 - Meet The World
"The multiplayer files"
Civ3 - Create The World
"Everybody can do it!"
Civ3 - Get The World
"What do you want today?"
Civ3 - Episode II
"The Dark Side"

In my opinion, it should have been called:
Civ3: The Patch

it should have been "Sid Meier The Moneygrubber Strikes Again!!!1" or something. "Civilization III Multiplayer Gold" would be slightly less enraging.

"Civ 3: Return of the Scenarios"
but then again, that's not really part of the expansion.

Well, as someone can remember, we had a similar thread a month ago about the name for Civ IV (just in case Firaxis will make another sequel).
I think some suggestions are quite interesting and some amusing. You can browse the whole thread at the link.
I'm quoting again mine suggestions straight here (they are just for kidding, of course):
Quote:
|
May be we can chose between choice like:
"This Time Not Rushed Civilization"
"Sim Civ, from the designer better know for his Sim Golf serie"
"A massive multiplayer Civ as you never saw since... well, as you never saw"
"Civ IV public beta"
"RoN - Rise of civilizatioN"
"Civ four the Cashcow"
"X-Civ for X-Box (X-rated with nude Cleopatra, Elizabeth, Joanne D'Arc - parental locking available)"
"CivilizApolyton" - already mentioned above with different words
"UnCivilization" - a prequel to the Civilization serie
"Oh, no! More Civilization" - with forced automated workers as smart as Lemmings wandering around brainless
"Another Civ 4 You"
Ok, more pun than enough, I suppose (if any survive to my raw english).
Oh, I forgot mine preferred:
"Civ IV? No thanks, I'm trying to quit"
