And they're some of his more sensible, meaningful choices, SG(1). His city names are the only entertaining part of our Oz games. Apart from winding up Deity, of course, for his slow play and warmongering.

And what is wrong with naming my cities after the serial numbers of Pakistani and Indian nuclear missiles I have known?

Judging from your starting positions, if your opponent isnt a complete idiot, you wont stand a chance. At least not in 1x1x deity.

Thats why i won.. Had it been anyone else playing i would have lost. Rivers are unbeatable when you have terrain like that. You talk about whales, but in case you didn't notice i had to build in the middle of tundra etc just to get at them, not only that i had to use ships to uncouver them first. Outside my little 4-5 city circle i couldn't build a damn thing because the cities would all starve to death. AH building pretty much every city on hill tops was just pure stupidity and that is what killed him.

ahahaha. Obviously he doesn't play much 1x.

You start was sooo much better, but you didn't do anything to take advantage of it. your own fault you didn't mine 3 buffelo and 2 coal mines in your starting position? I mean how stupid can you get? I would have traded my whales for your specials any day of the week.

With whales in your first 3 city's (build on grasslands btw) and a 4th whale and a nice little island after mapmaking with another couple of whales

How is a river and some buffalo going to compete with that?

But yeah, AH's building sites are not the best.

I didn't have any cities by that stage either

Why did it take you so long to kill me? I mean, you the military genius who gave me enough time to build a new capital 4 times

The point is, you got a more than fair start but you whined and whined about it like a girl.

????

Berlin leipzig and frankfurt.. I don't think those definately aren't grassland squares and 4rth city was hamburg (built on a wine). I didn't even find the whales until close to 400 bc. even then i wasn't dumb enough to build cities to get those whales until i had the stuff around it irrigated. Otherwise they would be in perm rebellion.

Killing 17 cities on hills and mountains is damn hard.

And anyone who thinks one or 2 whales makes a game is an idiot. The only thing that matters is how many grassland squares and rivers you have.

Thanks - we didn't know about the wine

And Berlin is definitely build on grassland - I couldn't understand when I saw your map why you claimed you didn't have any, LOL.

So? Markus, I fought to the last man, I was wiped out. Of course the casualties will look lop sided. DUH!

But after getting my capital early in AD it took you centuries to do it, lol

Talk about slow

Ha Ha ! finbar gets funnier with age..... strooth, I better keep quiet about that... Happy B'day Markus, btw.

And Markus, you really do whinge too much.
Your start is just fine, better than AH's.

And, you know that in the end any good player is not really hindered by the start except for the occassional horror start.

What I've realised about you now is that you argue to cover all bases - someone said you had a pre-determined excuse in case you lose... LOL

But, do you ever play to the end, like AH does, if you are losing?

Or do you always concede sooner or later when you think it's over?

That's something I picked up with Nappy who said he'd rather concede than allow me the pleasure of actually stomping all over his land. It's really a selfish attitude for supposed top players when other players like Horsie, Makeo and all the Aussies play till the bitter end. I guess it's a character thing.... fair dinkum!

I said that

If markus wins its skill. If you beat him its hut luck or he got a bad start or something. And he starts preparing the excuse early in the game, as was the case here. Squealed like a stuck pig about his bad start, lOL.

AH - It'a simply a case of the 'Certainty of the Young' he knows he's the best so any evidence contrary to this must be the result of some other cause.

Markus - Happy Birthday - you'll soon be joining the real world only another thirty years or so

SG[1]

p.s. I reckon those starts were about even - I would say that building on hills was downright defeatist and became a self-fulfilling prophecy - but what the hell do I know?

Thanks RAH - the truth is once I lost my capital I was just trying to see how long I could survive. I also like seeing his units die

Actually I narrowly missed getting a settler off which I was going to settle on an obscure one hex island - that might have got me through to the 2oth century

As for building on hills and mountains - I would have survived longer if I had - actually I settled a lot of hills and swamps and stuff mainly to pick up 4 specials and get the defence bonus.

But after I lost my third capital I unashamedly turned to mountain cities

In that game I must have built 30 or more cities

Horse surrendered when i took his first 2 cities last time. Even makeo surrenders a lot in duels.. Mostly because its a waste of time when the end is clearly in sight.

I still fail to understand how my start could be considered better.. Granted even if i had all the whales from the start i would still be screwed. A duel does not come down to science, the only thing that matters in duels is shield production + gold. One can easilly steal techs from the other player, so that makes any science useless. AH had all rivers + coal and buffelo specials, not to mention a bunch of grapes whales spice etc for his other cities. He could easilly have built 4 or 5 cities with 10 shields each. If those where pumping out vet knights he could have easilly killed my civ.

Duels on diety with the terrain AH created can only be won in one way. Find the other player, flood him with units = game over. On the second last turn AH attacked my units for the very first time LOL and killed one cat.

You still need to exploit tech windows to have a temporary attacking advantage and grab wonders. True gold is important here, but with your land you have the option of maximising cash and rushing stuff or choosing to open up a temporary tech advantage.

I don't think there is as much difference in the land as some have suggested, not for a 1x deity duel, but IMO your land unquestionably has the edge Markus.
