The Universal Translator
I love the movie for The Universal Translator, not because it is in any way visually dazzling but because of what it implies.
The rover drives up to a monolith and translates the glyphs using the universal translater and a quote from the conclave bible is the translation of the seemingly alien piece of stonework.
Was I improperly watching it or is that what the video actually depicts.
Does this imply that the monoliths had an alternative potential origin before the Alien Crossfire story was developed?
Does anyone have any deep thoughts on this?

Definitely a Miriam propaganda movie. No way the aliens would be bible freaks.
I can argue with the validity of the movie, but can't argue with the effects of the project itself (apart from the rather redundant "Unlimited artifacts can be cashed at this base" one, since at that point all the artifacts are pretty much found)

The other interesting thing about the UT movie is the low tech rover. Possibly a UN Unity rover that was never upgraded?

I doubt that it implies anything like that. The monoliths probably always had the same purpose, so the words translating like that shows :
1) Whoever made the movie didn't totally think it through
2)It was actually meant to depict an evil Miriam propoganda movie
I probably vouch for #1, but Miriam's such a nutcase that #2 might be possile....

It reminds me of the X-Files episode where Scully finds an alien ship off the coast of Africa, which has the Bible written in Navaho all over it.
The good thing is that you're allowed to draw your own conclusions about the monolith's text, and what it represents. If you decide that God was an alien who lived on Alpha Centauri, that's not disproven; if you decide that humans once lived on Alpha Centauri and achieved a much higher level of technology than ever existed on Earth, that's not disproven; if you decide it was a propaganda video made by the Believers to show that even Planet bows to their God, that's not disproven.

Just a stupid idea ...
... Or that the Universal Translator translates any given unknown writing in what you just want to read.
