Famous(?) Finns
It would be nice to know the extent in which these people are known outside Finland. Select the persons on the list that you have heard of.
Hope this is not considered a copycat thread.

I know them all!
You didn't include Urho "Kekkonen Kekkonen Kekkonen" Kekkonen!
Jorma Ollila seems to be missing, too...

Well, there can only be 16 options... very many people had to be dropped from the list, including Kekkonen, Ollila, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Mikael Forssell, Saku Koivu, Harri Holkeri, Max Jakobson, Sirkka Hämäläinen, Marcus Grönholm, Runeberg... ... ...

Oh, Kamrat: Don't forget Otto-Ville Kuusinen (Where from the name OttoK comes from ), The 'prime minister' of the 'puppet government' in Finland during WW2 - He was a HC-communist

Actually, after his charade as a Soviet stooge-of-a-prime-minister, Otto Wille Quislinginen was a moderately high shot in the Soviet government, where he was considered a moderate. Then again, this is Soviet Union we're talking 'bout.

Yes, how could I forget OttoK But since he was a Mosow puppet he´s not my kind of communist. At least Tuominen saw the error of his ways and choose the path that lead away from Stalins perverted massmurder project (ie the Soviet Union).

Väinö Linna, "Tuntematon Sotilas"
Considering the quality of finnish books and films about the war I'd love to see finns take over hollywoods production of wars films, then we would get some real films!

Kropotkin, be carefull what you wish for.. renny harlin is considering on filming the story of Mannerheim.. though i'm not sure which era of his career it would consentrate on...maybe warstuff made in hollywood style.. i don't know.
i don't think it should be filmed though, because it's doomed to fail.

Glad to see this concept will likely catch on.
I knew Alvar Aalto, Martti Ahtisaari, Mika Häkkinen, Jari Litmanen, Gustaf Mannerheim, Paavo Nurmi, Jean Sibelius, Linus Torvalds and Mika Waltari.
Lots of skiers could no doubt have been included and I think Urho Kekkonen would've been a familiar person to a decent amount of foreigners as well. Not to mention the pioneer in modern sanitation, W.C. Hygieinen...
Is it my imagination, or did a fair number of Finns vote on this poll? All the choices seem to have a fair amount of votes. Only Finns could know that much about other Finns.

Maybe 'cause there's about one million finns here that constantly starts threads about some obscure finnish happening or personality. Even if one is not the least bit interested one more or less have to read the titles of the threads to find something interesting about something else in the midst of 'em.

I think many can also identify Ville Valo.. as the lead singer in HIM. But i think he can not be considered as person because he's in a band..

I considered putting Valo on the list as the representant of Finnish pop musicians but then, for some reason, decided for Andy McCoy instead. It seems he's actually rather unknown to foreigners.
So, the Finns that are best known abroad seem to be Häkkinen and Torvalds...

I know all of these except McCoy, Thorne and Waltari.
I also know a lot of Karjalainen jokes. Where's he?
Oh, and the greatest poet ever to grace the Swedish language, Edith Södergran. She should be on there.

I know like a hand full of them, certainly less than of the Danes, not by far though.
I know Ahtisaari (politician, basically ended the Yugoslavia vs NATO thing), Häkkinen (F1), Litmanen (footy), Thorvalds (software stuff).
