The random map generator & arhipelago
Am I the only one who are unsatisfied with the result of
the random map generator when using the "archipelago" setting?
I want to have lots of island but instead I tend to get a few, extreamly narrow but very " long" continents that may spin around the whole world often beeing only a few tiles wide.
This is not an archipelago! Not even close!

yeah, i've done "archipelago" with the most water possible several times, and i always end up on a continent with 2 neighbors all up in my shizz! possibly you need to try a different size map? i usually do standard.

yes, the archipeligo on standard size or above usualy creates one large continent, or 2 or 3 large ones, but never have i seen an all-island map.
i define an isnald as a landmass that cannot support more than 7 or 8 cities with minimal overlapping.

i've gotten lucky a few times and gotten large-ish islands. the best was 7 islands with about a dozen packed in cities along with a large continent for 4 civs.

I get more islands when I select "continents." Archipelago generation sucks.

I like the long snaky landmasses with lots of bottlenecks, lobes, and peninsulas. Therefore I usually play on Large Archipelago maps. The terminology is definitely misleading, though, and it took me a while to find out how to generate the maps I like.
What would you call this landmass category instead of Archipelago?

Ummm...........I dunno........maybe........... Islands ???
Sorry, couldn't resist saying that
Yeah, I've had some bad experiences with that settign, never getting quite what I wanted....
One question I have is does the random setting randomly choose oen of the three types of maps then generat one of them, or does it create and entirly random map???

I dunno...snaky continents sounds fun to me
Maybe we should have a fourth option in the game setup menu:
1) Pangea
2) Continents
3) Snaky Continents
4) Archipelago

Specific Numbers
It would be nice to give the RMG a range for the number of possible landmasses as well as minimum and maximum sizes.

I think the problem is that the islands all end up running into each other and connecting... it seems to work much better on lower-water settings and larger maps. Virtually every time I do maximum landmass archipelago I end up with all but 1 or 2 civs on the same huge landmass, with a few tiny uninhabited islands.

Islands
There probably should be a fourth option: Islands. Just setting some upper limit on the number of tiles in any landmass ought to do it.
And it would also be good to have more small islands generated no matter which option you choose, in addition to the continents, Pangaea, and archipelagoes.

The problem I have with the terrain generator is how common it is for starting positions to be unviable. In my current game, the Greeks started in the middle of plains, next to hills and a giant mountain range, and next to a large desert. They were doing so badly on this inhospitable terrain that I had to kill them off out of mercy.
It's even worse when it's the player that starts in this sort of rough terrain. It's not unusual for your settler to be plopped in the middle of a vast desert.
