Probably not a server issue. I say do lots of tracerts and make them prove beyond any shadow of a doubt that the problem is on the server.
Very sill to assume that the server is at fault even if that is the most likely cause. Need to make people do tracerts.

Judging by the other posters, it seems it's happening every day!!
So, this morning it worked, then all the afternoon it was out of order, and now the evening it works again!

please trust me when i say that the specific message comes up ONLY when the cpu load is high
again, nothing to do with the connection, nothing to prove with doing traceroutes

of course it's nothing for them to get a better server.
but often companies dont act so fast. can you imagine the bureucracy of the tech department having to ask for a new server, justifying it's purchase, etc?
there is also the example that there have been times where we posted a patch before the official site cause it was late or it was friday evening and the webmaster for that particular site had gone home

Word from the Infogrames forum admin is that they do have simultaneous user access issues. Mainly (my opinion based on what he said), that there's only one user database and thus the load in terms of simultaneous users doesn't scale well, despite the database machine being fairly hefty (dual 1.7Ghz processors, 1GB ram).
Part of that stems from the fact that it's running MySQL -- it's not particularly well-suited to this volume of traffic because it can't handle very many simultaneous accesses efficiently. I think Postgresql might work out better, but I'm not going to assume hasn't already tried it, either. Those may be his only practical options given that those are the only popular/free DBMSs out there....

I just got a "server too busy try again later."
Is this because of the new stats?

Markie, I was just being sarcastic. I can remember when Dan was very reluctant to fiund the server at fault. (Asked for tracerts and other troubleshooting, when it was pretty obvious the server was the issue...when multiple users all over the World see a problem...and its only with one site...the issue is not in the net.)

I've had two servers too busy since the new stats.
Just a data point.

Well, it's the server or the part of the connection that all the users rely on (the server's interface on out to at least the first level provider's demarc).

Xentax, sure. And what we foudn invariably was that it was either a code issue with the site or more commonly a server issue. But Dan was much more interested in ruling out low likelihood scenarios before inpsecting the mkost likely rpoblems. I think part of the issue was the Tech Service at Gamestats which game him the runaround. (I've managed techs...I'm familiar with the tendancy to try to fingerpoint away...)

or perhaps it's not very noble of a person to publicly "point the finger" to coworkers and partners...

vBulletin code problems tend to get noticed. This was one I got this morning (along with 2 "The server is too busy at the moment or the maximum number of guests have been exceeded. Please try again in a few minutes" messages):
Warning: Too many connections in /home/virtual/site1/fst/var/www/html/forums/admin/db_mysql.php on line 40

Oops, there was some html in there the vBulletin didn't like… nothing like a stray {/table} to mess things up.

The choice between tact and truth is an interesting question. But even that you state it as this makes me feel confirmed in my suspicions...
