Heheh. What he said. Is MPE considered a science wonder, considering it is mainly used to scr*w over the AI Civs via tech trading?

Put me on the list. I wanna see how we do with no SSC. I haven't played without one of those since I discovered Apolyton...

Nope, MPE is not a SciWoW. At this point in the game the hard part of following the roolz is knowing your ABCs.

I think you guys can handle that.

2650 bc. Advanced Tribe of Brenzaidograd in the north, with a whale and a wheat. 25 gold.
2600 bc. We discover Alphabet. We’re quite advanced, are we not ? Why was a settler making a road on a wine hill ? Let’s make a mine too !
2250 bc. We discover Ceremonial Burial.
2150 bc. None horsemen from a hut.
1950 bc. I resign and rename myself the boring king.

Nothing much happened, but I explored quite a lot. There’s some nice spots for cities, unfortunately we started elsewhere. I think we’re up for a bad start, so it should be a better challenge than usual. Here is the saved game.

Quite brief log... but then, not much happened.

1950: Mad Warlord STYOM takes control after Warlord Brenzaida is found asleep in his soup.
1900 - 1850: nada
1800: Code of Laws discovered. Researching Monarchy.
1750: Settler in Abington; starts Settler.
1700: Booboo on You founded; starts Warrior.
1650: zilch.
1600: Barbarians land near Booboo on You (2 archers). Phalanx rushed.
1550: Phalanx assembled in Booboo on You; starts Settler.
1500: Brenzaidogradian Chariot defeats barb Archer.
1450: Betwixt 2 Bays founded; starts Settler. Barb archers pounded to smithereens under our mighty Chariot wheels.

Well pleased with his sleaze, STYOM can now rest in his ease.

Here's the save.

STYOM, I did a little over 20 turns, Julius did almost 20, so do another 10 or so and then we'll see if anybody else is gonna join.

Or go ahead and play if you so choose!

Don't say I didn't warn you! :p
As Warlord STYOM prepares to step down in favour of Vice-Warlord Al ('I invented the Phalanx') Gore, an unhappy mob gathers outside the Citadel, begging for another term. 'Who will save us from the oncoming barbarians?', they cry. A moving plea, and besides, the mob is armed. Thus, another 500 years of STYOM.

1400: Aztecs start Pyramids. Monarchy discovered, 1 turn too late for Oedo Seeking Pottery, now.
1350: nothing much.
1300: Oedo
1250: Settler in Brenzaidograd; starts Warriors. Monarchy formed!
1200-1150: very quiet.
1100: Warriors in Brenzaidograd; Settlers started.
1050: Beachyfish founded; starts Warrior.
1000: Vikings start Hanging Gardens Settler in Abington; Settler started.
975: BoobooOnYou builds Settlers; Settlers started. Pottery discovered! Colossus work changed to HG. Now we're learning Currency.
950: Nothing much.
925: Gardens rushed. Catchyname founded, starts Warriors.
900: Gardens built, Vikings switch to Colossus. Colossus started in Avalon.

STYOM rides off into the night, having played too many turns and leaving his successor to ponder whether to try for Colossus ahead of the Vikings, or (hint, hint) aim for MPE.

NB. Those of you who want a challenge will be pleased to hear that we are 5th on the Powergraph

Maybe this one is just the three of us. I'll go again, but another can join and catch up.

Yello, Merc? Nic? Anyone else want a go at this?

Straybow, I am afraid that many players don't like special rules. Internet is the land of the free
I agree that we're up to a bad start. Maybe even without rules it would be tough. But as you have not forbidden the Howie, I remain confident.

Oh yeah, love the city names. They really go with the Celto-Anglo civ thing.

(Note to self: Next time the roolz will state that names have to be taken from towns listed in the 1992 Rand-McNally Road Atlas of Great Britain )

GS[1], I'll wait. By "at the moment" you mean you'll get to it by this evening (GMT), not "maybe Thursday?" Not letting job, parenthood, significant other, or mundane duties get in the way of civving, are you?

Waiting to make sure that we got the Gardens, were you?

The more the merrier

To Stray: The last game I played on my own, I named all the cities after indigenous beer brands... I suppose I could do that alphabetically...

Have fun Msr Nic. I'm sure they've got some kind of drug for coming down off your Civ/Apolyton addiction while on vacation.

I'll go, then SG[1], then return to play order with Julius.

STYOM, beer? And SG will starting naming cities for cheap Dago reds?

[ Note to self: Name the king "Arthur." Call the tribe "Britons." Not one of these boobs gets it, not even a Monty Python reference on the horizon. Try leading by example…]

Straybow, if you wanted a Monty Pythons reference, you should have named Sir Robin the Brave our king. Remember his bard

It is a silly place.
Well, of course the city names have only just gotten to "C" for the really obvious one. (It's only a model.)

Staggering home, barely conscious, Staybow just manages to post the file. But it isn't like anything happened. Built some Settlers, a Caravan which hopes that someday we'll have ships that can take it to another continent, a Market, a Library or two, a Temple or two… you get the picture.

Of course we had to discover Currency, Trade, and Writing before we could build 'em.

One Viking ship was spotted off the coast near Avalon, therefore I suspect they abide to the South.

Pythonized Play Order
Who's up now?

1) Straybow * "Bravely ran away, away…"
2) Julius * * * * "No! …I didn't"
3) STYOM * "Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcicial aquatic ceremony!"
4) LaFayette * "…and that, my Leige, is how we know the Earth to be banana-shaped"
5) SG[1] * "She turned me into a newt!"

Alphabetical means name your founded cities in rough (first letter) alpha order, as an organizational aid. Don't worry about TANSTAAFL coming after Tunafish; don't feel you must rename captured cities.

No Science Wonders (GL, Cope's, Newton's) assures that we will not grossly outpace our competitors. The size of continents should be a limit to early expansion as well.

No City Bribing (modified) applies to core AI cities. The exception: occasional loner AI city (from wandering Settlers the AI likes to send out, or Adv Tribe, etc) far from their core is fair game. Invasion actions shall be limited to one (1) attempt to sabotage walls (or another improvement) and unlimited production sabotage attempts.

Maybe you should have named one of the cities in your turn, (St.) Aaaaaaaargghh. That might have been a better hint

Well, if I'd managed to found one of the "B" cities it would've been called Badon Hill (at which battle Sir Robin the Not-So-Brave-As-Lancelot soiled himself).

Yes, Aaaaaargh was the obvious and best choice, in my opinion
Who's playing next
If it is me, I will play this evening.
Did we get up on the powergraph. We don't need new rules to be down in this one

from the Journal of Ratty Rex ...
King Ratty appoints himself King of all Britons and takes throne in Avalon.

-325 = sets a luxury rate so that the people can celebrate ...
-300 = BeachyFish sends out Settlers; Abington builds expensive unneccessary Temple;
-275 =
-250 = Makeshift Barb trap completed - I wish the Phalanx were vet;
-225 = Settler makes Avalon 5; Temple started in Avalon;
-200 = Map Making -> Literacy; Settler makes Avalon 6; Temple completed; Daresbury founded; Barb Archer/King approaches trap - will our hilled fortified green Phalanx hold?
-- Yes, just and became vet!
-175 = Gems, Booboo, 66g; Barb trap sprung, 150g; Science now @ 5;
-150 = The Royal Navy sets to sea;
-125 = Silk, Abington, 18g - a 3 arrow route and now we can use the repeating Hides in Avalon; Dogsbody founded;
-100 = Literacy -> Philosophy; Marco Polo's Embassy in Avalon; The Vikings have now started the Lighthouse; Our opponents have a few interesting techs, notably Bridge Building, but as we are only four turns from Philosophy, King Ratty chose not to approach the other mighty leaders of the world until after we had that particular cat in the bag; We are, of course, Supreme & Spotless;
-075 = Nomad from hut; Avalon can now move to 10 shields a turn, unfortunately at the cost of reducing our research to 6 - a judgement call for my successor;

We comfortably top the PowerGraph ahead of the Vikings - beating them to the Lighthouse would be nice we don't have much real estate...

75bc, Why a phalanx in Avalon, we need caravans.
50bc, Mongols develop iron working.
25bc, Busy diplomacy. We get horseback, iron working, wheel, warrior code, masonry, polytheism, construction, republic, seafaring and bridge building. Maps from the Mongols far away, and the Aztecs, near us in the south in a pretty little islands where our warmonger players probably plan to visit soon for their next holidays.
1ad, Divine Wind founded in the island between the Aztec and us. Vikings threaten to finish Lighthouse, how badly do we need it. If I sell improvements, I can get it (3 caravans are near), but I deem it not worth it, science with trade to the Aztecs should bring us soon to magnetism : sticky mouse has not been founded yet ! What’s more, a few turns later, I discover a whale near but not near enough Divine Wind.
20ad, diplo lands in a new continent, east of the Aztecs.
40ad, mone elephant from a hut.
60ad, none horseman from a hut, always on this new continent.
80-100-120, 140 ad, 112 gold with a caravan to the Aztecs. Escape My Fate is founded.
160-180ad, Philosophy, 320 gold with a caravan. We discover Mongol settlement on the now not so new continent.
200 ad, time to resign, what, not soon enough ?

I’ve played it with originality, not to say madly. My biaised scheme that my successors will soon forget is to trade, trade and trade with the aztecs. They’re in republic right now. I probably traded too early for techs with the AI. “C’est la vie” ! And I don’t believe in a SSC and didn’t make Avalon grow. We can’t build science wonders, right ?
