The sailing MGE succession game
There’s already 4 sucession games going on, but all of them with 2.42. I think it is good to have one with MGE, too. There is no special rule to make it more difficult, all the challenge will come from the starting settings. It’s MGE, deity, raging hordes, with a giga random map of 250x131, small lands, archipelago. The bloodlust option is on and I’ve choses many expansive civs, fighting ferioucly to settle many islands. It could be (should be ?) tough to find and kill them all before 2020 ad. As we won’t get to them by trirem and might need Apollo to see the whole map, some balanced or even perfectionnist strategy, might be required. But it is of course up to who’s playing, that’s the fun of it.

Here is a saved 4000bc game. I’ve already played first and second in 2 succession games yesterday and gladly give the 1st spot to someone else. I particulary hope to see the Git’s Admiral mastering super-ironclads on the oceans of this world, and Smash the master of ship chaining as minister of planification. We might also learn if LaFayette spies do swim (and if they do, what is the color of their bikinis). All MGE only players are also warmly awaited : Anterkov, Marquis de Sodaq, Jr-Rabbit, Zedd and all the others I am forgetting right now.
Lineup :
1) Marquis de Sodaq
2) Space05us
3) Julius
4) Scouse Gits (2)
5) Straybow or someone else
6) SG (1) [should play now]
7)
8)

And here is finally the saved game. We are the vikings as I thought a peaceful trading maritime civ was needed, but I changed the colors. Feel of course to find great fitting names for our glorious cities.

In 4000bc, Sodaknud ascended to the viking throne. Wise soothsayers informed him that his new kingdom would grow to greatness, but the road would be long and full of adventure - and danger. His people would need to master the seas in order to reach supremacy...
He ordered his people to settle, as there were whales nearby. The other settlers found some friendly archers in a nearby hut. They were given the honor of defending the palace, Lutefisk, from any foreigners with harmful intent. Other units were sent about to explore the world. To the north, the land was arid, but the seas fertile. Some wise men looked at the lay of the land and thought there may be some gain in planting trees outside the capitol. Soon a forest grew, and it teemed with pheasants.
Meanwhile, the viking wise men concocted new things for the people to learn, beginning with a more efficient government form. Sodaknud was crowned our first king! Seeing the great expanses of water, our finest minds set about ways of mapping coastline and building boats. We mastered the horse and devised a number system. More importantly, they developed ways to tap the sea for its abundant fish. Some of our youth wish to train for the glorious task of exploring the wide world, to further our glory as a people! The wise men wish now to develop a standard of trade, so that we may grow wealthy as well as wise.
Our fertile womenfolk have provided us with large families. Many have gone forth and settled new towns, expanding our young realm. It is now 2000bc, and all is well. The first ship is ready to sail from Lefse. King Sodaknud quietly passes away, with a content look on his face. The people are saddened, but look forward to their next leader to continue their journey to greatness...

975 bc. Spanishs look strong. We don’t attack ... yet. 3 units shall contain them and we can occupy the fertile land of the south of their continent and teach them the viking way later on.
950 bc. Knudavik founded.
925-900-875 bc. Knudafoldur founded.
850bc. Spanish sneak attack. We lose a legion and them 3 units. I thought they were “rational”, damn that MGE AI ! We discover a new continent in the west.
825 bc. We lose a horseman, 2 units lost by spanish, they seem to have plenty chariots and we’re losing this war. 50 gold in a hut. We discover literacy.
800 bc. We lose our last legion in spanish land, so much for my plan. We should make peace and hang tough with our only city. It should occupy the spanish, then less prone to expand elsewhere with our nail city in their back . Philosophy from a hut.
775 bc. We discover astronomy.
750-725 bc. We kill one of those *** chariot, but I fear more are coming.

10 turns played, good time to resign, This one is moving fast and we need new blood. Mine is spilled all over the spanish continent. The new leader need to choose a path, a golden one if possible, because right now, we’re quite astray.
Here is the saved game.

Well, better than nothin'
Continued building caravans; used a couple to make routes but none were worth much. Spanish demanded Navigation. King Straybow said, "First take a long walk off a short pier…" King Phillip was not amused, and killed a Settlers. Our 2 Horsemen took out 2 Chariots and a Phalanx but were killed in counterattacks.
We sent a Legion and some Horsemen across. They plundered Saragossa (formerly located east of the lake) for a few gold and knowledge of Warrior Code. Two more Horsemen were deposited near Salamanca. One took out a Cat and the other died assaulting the city's Phalanx.
Meanwhile, by 1 AD there were 8 accumulated caravans at Lutefisk. Commissioned Thor Magellanbork who managed to make it around the world by 20 AD.
OK, so what the heck happened to his maps?
Despite the loss of his maps all his seamen have been made captains and mates in our vessels, and their "feel" for the winds and seas is uncanny.
Meanwhile we have added knowledge of Physics, Construction, and Wheel. We are poised to sweep the Spanish scum before us like chaff, as soon as we can ship our lancers and chariots across the channel.

Oh, forgot to mention that the Mongols are apparently on the continent south of us. A ship was spotted and an Archers unit landed, which we bribed just so it wouldn't cause us problems. The Dutchy of Ditcheebork was established to aid movement of ships and war parties southward, should that become necessary.
The Explorer on the Western continent impressed a tribe of natives such that they decided to join us. He also discovered some minerals. A ship is being built at Nanking so that he can be moved to a new continent.
Many roads were built for our lancers and charioteers to move about with haste.

Julius, thanx for the invitation. This would be a great way to learn a lot while only screwing up about 20 percent or so of your progress , BUT
...unfortunately, my schedule does not permit me to join.
Where others are finishing their uni exams, I am deep in the throes of work and family commitments. From now until about Aug. 5. (Note to Julius -- I'll be in Switzerland in early July. What part of the country are you from?)
Great to see a MGE Succession, and very sorry I can't come out to play. I guess I'll do my usual -- admiring from afar.
Have fun and kick butt , everyone!

Tail of a Happy Rodent ...
0100 = King Rodent surveys the Realm - and is well pleased. The Mongols are pursuaded to give us maps and Iron Working - the city of Kashgar is in Barbarian hands - for now! We appear to be waging a war with green units! Barracks rushed in IYB. Rather than make more green cannon fodder a policy of Caravan production has been instigated in the hope of being able to purchase some Barracks soon.
0120 = not much
0140 = Market in Lutefiske; Beads, Lefse, 8g; Settler joins Lutefisk now size 7; H01 founded in honour of the Goddess
0160 = Spanish Chariots move three squares to kill our Legion and Horse - boo - not quite a cheat one square was roaded, but a vet Legion with a chariot at 2/3s - boo
0180 = Kudevic, Salt, 18g; Spac-Seville, Dye, 104g;
0200 = Kashgar joins our cause for 153g - contains Horse + 2 dips - good value - even better when horse kills Bab King for 150g!;
0220 = not a lot
0240 = Polytheism -> Monotheism; Embassy with Mongols; H02, B01 founded; Revenge, 3 Spanish Chariots and a Catapult somewhat redesigned;
0260 = H03 founded; Another spanish Chariot killed;
0280 = Granary in Lutefisk; H04 founded;
0300 = Marco Polo's Embassy in Lutefisk; AI has no desired Techs - only the Republic; give Mongols (key civ) loads of tech get 200g tribute; Maps from France, England, Rome, Zulus; We know where they all live!!!
0320 = Sticky Mouse founded - work starts immediately on the Great Institute; H05 founded; Spanish Archer & Catapult disincentivated; Knudafoldur, Gold, 14g;
0340 - Colosseum in Lutefisk; Settler dispatched to capital to grow it to size 8;
King Rodent, having imbibed far too much altar wine at the shrine of the Goddess Eye-sea-ess, stumbles on the steps and breaks his neck ...
SG[1] - hoping he read somewhere that this one was 12 turns each

Don't you love how the AI can send its Trireme across open water for 15 turns even without Lighthouse? But I guess they'd be truly pitiful without such cheats…
Dang, I loaded the game and didn't notice the Frogs and Zulus even after scrolling over to see England. I hadn't read carefully and didn't realize you'd gotten maps from everybody. I've never played on a world so big you couldn't see the whole thing at max zoom out.
