The Age of the Comrade
GULP

Polite notes for players/readers:

1) The point of having Marco Polo's Embassy is to monitor the advances of the other civs. The French have Democracy which we can/have acquired by trading science. SoL is useful to break out of Monarchy to some form of corruption free government..
2) If caravans are stored for wonder building they should be food caravans...otherwise the supply commodities are compromised.
3) We don't need Temples in size 3 cities when we have both the Gardens and Mike's! Cities building Temples had inadequate Martial Law...so there were some red faces.

1260 - Extract some tribute; Swap techs with French for Democracy and Medicine
1280 - Sell 7 Barracks - we have Sun Tzu!
1300 - Statue of Liberty built - Revolution
1320 - Welcome to Communism Lutefisk Suburb founded as a caravan feeder for the capital. The French start Leonardo's Workshop so caravan production goes into full swing.
1340 - The Iron Curtain celebrates! Lutefisk builds Bank; Peace with Spanish...there is no point in waging an endless war which is eating up resources. Ironclads will kill the Spanish quickly 300 Tribute from Mongols. 250 Tribute from Romans; 200 tribute from French
1360 - Lutefisk builds University...to hurry up Steam Engine!
1380 - Chivalry now for Steam Engine; Spanish declare War!
1400 - Caravan trading with the capital - at this time in the game the bonuses are poor but the ongoing trade routes are worthwhile to maintain celebrations.
1420 - The Institute and Port Ironclad founded; Chemistry from Romans
1440 - Lutefisk builds Leonardo's Workshop Capital now size 12; Discover the Mongols have built Kazan on the south eastern edge of our main continent. East Lutefisk founded as another caravan feeder city. Oops asked for tribute from the Mongols too soon it's WAR! Will just have to bribe Kazan 100 tribute from Rome
1460 - Steam Engine Rush build Ironclads. Science is now @ zero except for one Einstein; Edge of Mankind founded
1480 - Operation Madrid - the Navy sails; Iberian Canal/Port Sleaze/Desert Song founded
1500 - Madrid and KRC captured Kazan bribed for 222g; Channel Packet founded

Great turn Scouse Gits!

I have downloaded and will upload tomorrow. (borrowed another friends PC for a while )

That was quite a play and it'll be hard to follow, but I will give it my best.

Great turns, SG2!!

I think the temples were built pre-Mikes. The barracks were clearly expendable once comrade Vlad snagged Sun Tsu for us. As for Democracy in France, I must admit that just slipped by me. Nice recovery -- AND we get SOL!

SG2, you must enlighten me on the art of exacting tribute. I rarely get a payoff, usually just an easy way to get war declared without ruining my reputation. I see you're financing things I could never hope to accomplish that way, clearly, I'm missing something here... What's the trick?

Hope it's not too frustrating playing with relative tyros...

I was presented with an open goal as there were several caravans in Lutefisk and the French handed over Democracy.

I didn't sell any existing Temples but found there were some under construction. I sold the barracks as they were redundant with Sun Tzu's War Academy.

Tribute One of the advantages of Marco Polo's Embassy is the ability to monitor AI gold. They are unlikely to cough up if they have less than 50 in their treasury. You may on some occasions be given a (useless) tech instead of money. Be prepared for War as a possible outcome.

Tribute can be obtained from civs below you on the Powergraph. I used to believe that it was necessary to have a city on the same landmass as the AI in question…but this not the case. In our game both the French and Romans handed over gold. Like many things in the game there are surprises. The advertised attitude of some civs is not a guide to success. An empire with a receptive attitude can suddenly declare war when you make the demand for cash. Unless you want war don't ask for tribute every turn. Every fourth turn is about right, though if you are Supreme and are next to a very weak civ you can sometimes be successful more frequently.

The best rule is: remember to do it!

Are you suggesting this could be done by simply running to Fundy and staying in that govt? If so, how would you induce the AI to develop the needed techs in time for a launch?? In my (limited) experience, the AI can't be depended on to do this unless the human player is making significant tech progress.

Intriguing.

I'm still at a more basic level in my use of trade, and only last weekend -- inspired by various SG references -- had my first Fundy victory.

(Much fun BTW -- The transition from "Will this work?" to total victory with MANY troops to spare was amzing. I ran to SOL, tactics, and espionage, then switched to fundy and --voila!) Not an early victory, but a resounding one! Almost too easy.

This is a story 'bout a man named Zedd,
Viking ruler who barely kept his people fed.
'till one day he figured what to do.........
He irigated the land and grew them some food.

Sustinance
Wheat

Next thing you know people are happy as can be,
All the people celebrate "we love the king".
Higher luxeries is what we need!
so they all got drunk and stared families.

Kids that is......
little folk....
Population explosion.

Sorry bout the horrible ryming but i thought this would be funny. I like to play a maximum growth stratagy so for my few turns i used settlers to irrigate and upped luxuries to stimulate growth. Its not something i was going to put in the timeline but wanted to mention it.

Some of these towns only had one or two units in them so Martial Law was inadequate - hence red faces. With the Gardens and Mike's there is no reason for having temples in such small places.

I didn't sell any temples...I just had a feeling that somebody might wish to go fundy in the not too distant future and enjoy the tithes

At the end of AD 1500 Zedd takes the seat of Consul for teh communist Viking Civilization. He looks arround and exhales heavily......theres alot to do and not much time to do it. Therefore I have sighned the order to Invade mongol territory and take out thier nearest port city, Nishapur. Nishapur has been confirmed as the staging ground for mongol attacks against our citizens and we will see it destroyed! "

AD 1570
Romans discove economics and begin building Adam, smiths trading co. Vikings attempt trade of tech but romans efuse, Oh well plan "B". Gallion with two diplos sets sail for rome.

Nishapur liberation force mobilized! (2 iron clads, 2 crusaders and diplo) expect arrival in AD 1590

AD 1590
Spanish sue for peace.....Zedd replies "stuff it in your pie hole! "
Surprising mongol attack on port Iron, crusader, elephant, knight. our lone pikeman valiently fights off the elephants but is overr run by crusaders but not before inflicting lots of damage.

AD 1600
Vikings take Nishpur!
Mongols land more reinforcement in Port Iron.....Zedd decides he has no choice but to attack but fears he will kill the last Port Iron citizen. The attac is success full but alas Port Iron now lays in ruins, Zedd vows never to forget this incident and takes it to heart.

AD 1610
Vikings press spanish ranks.Toledo is captured! however two of our fine crusaders gave thier livs to bring the spanish dogs to justice. The spanish feerfully plead for a cease fire and give up 100G. Settlers on the spanish/viking island are set in place to build a city as well as two settlers on the western island. Zedd decides to take a rest, he feals like he must go out and find peace within him self and find a way to enjoy all the charitable contribution made to him by the people

Zedd "before i step down as your consul i wish to pass some knowledge to the next consul... The Spanish seem to want to have thier heads bashed some more and are amassing an army in Sevil. Diplomats have investigated and show only a archer and phlanx defending the acctual city. you may see this for yourself before "end of turn". Also I have asked the cities to build marketplaces and library to help our people grow and prosper. (besides they ARE free) As my last order i have asked for an escort to my retreat and will retire there for some time. Fare well Comrads!"

Ah... On my last round (pre-Mike), there were cities in which the second and third unit were still not able to neutralize the call for Elvis - thus the temple building. I did not start a temple in any city that was still size one or two.

The temples I did build increased production dramatically, allowing the breeding of many camels - used to construct our lovely chapel! In other words, I had to solve the problem in order to build the wonder to solve the problem.

Sweet stuff, Zedd. Now with Adam's, we can build a strong infrastructure without losing momentum in our campaign to bring the Communist worker's paradise to the poor, misbegotten Spanish and Mongols.

Go get 'em, Julius!

1650 ad. Why do we have so many crusaders fortify in our cities. I have other ambitions for them. We rushbuild the improvements to concentrate on building military units.
1660 ad. We sink a Mongol caravel.
1670 ad. We discover railroad. Diplomat destroy Seville city wall and we capture the city killing many naive spanish units wandering near our troops all around the spanish continent.
1680 ad. We cut luxuries to make science go faster by brute force (3 turns). We capture Samarkand. 100 gold from a hut.
1690 ad. We capture Khanbalyk.
Mongols are down, Spanish fight fiercely. We decide on the construction of a big navy and a great invasion force to attack the Romans. In the mean while, a few ironclads should annoy the 3 other civs.
1700ad, we discover Theology
1710-1720 ad, weak counter-attacks from Spanish and Mongols, “Delenda est Roma” task force completed.
1730 ad. We capture Bokhara and Shangtu .
1740 ad. We capture Valladolid. We discover Sanitation.
1750 ad. We capture Valencia.
1752 ad. We capture Bilbao.
1754 ad. We capture Byzantium and get gunpowder. Our 3rd diplo destoys the walls of Rome and we capture Rome that was defended by 4 units. We capture Cordoba and Vigo. At the top of glory, I decide to retire.

Mongols should be finished soon, Spanish are nearly extinguished. Romans have been hit very hard and renforcements are coming. I propose, but I trust my successor will play otherwise that the troops of the spanish continent, once the sweep is completed go for the English, later rejoined by the Roman ones. Armies in Mongol territory should later take the French. The Zulus look very week. I’ve sent a small force to test them. As we are very rich, we could buy one of their cities.
