Its why the bill was passed shortly after the 1909(?) budget. So as not to continually rely on threats.

Think it was the 1909 budget, or maybe 1911?

Didn't Wilson try and get a Lords Reform bill through in the 70's? Or am I just making it up now?

1909 was the year of the budget, and it was passed in 1911 after the two years were up?
I know there was an election in 1910 aswell.

I am not sure what the poll (from the first post) means. If the people of Britain are unhappy about crime, then the right usually is preferred in the US, anyway, because they champion law and order.
I drew the conclusion that the unhappiness in the UK is caused by the crime situation from Sixchan's post.
Ron, if this conclusion is incorrect, what is the cause of Britain disillusionment?

Oh believe me the British have a lot to be disillusioned about up to but not including:
-Losing half the world in 50 years, even Scotland wants out
-Having one of your former colonies make you their *****
-An ineffectual useless government that has been in power for 5 years but has managed to do nothing. And these monkeys are the best they have!
-Their in an organization run by the Germans and French. Do you want to be in any organization run by the Germans and French?
-Having so little culture that the best food you have comes from a former colony. They had 1000 years to make something better than weird animal organs and completely failed.
-A whole assortment of problems including miserable weather, race relations, terrible health care, an embarassing monarchy, etc.
Despite all of this I still think its ten times better than AMerica and will shortly be moving there when I get out of college. The grass is greener in Britain because it rains so damn much.

He got it in one. And of course, Labour say 'Tought on Crime, Tough on the causes of crime'.

Can I just say that I wish fellow members of my nation would stop moaning just because England isnt the best place in the world to live. Why cant us British just be happy that we live in a free country, as opposed to living in a worser part of the world, and believe me they do exist!

You are right. There is at Least ONE good thing in England...The road to Scotland.

Ned, I think this has already been posted, but you have a nasty habit of ignoring things that you don'tlike, so:
Britons love moaning. It's what we do. We moan about the weather, the food, the pollution, the crime, the transport, the TV, the newspapers, everything.

I moan as much about Labour now as I did about the Con-servatives.
OK not as much but quite a lot.
Quite a lot of people here think that being tough on crime doesn't solve anything but sorting out peoples basic living standards does help ease the problem, which would mean a more left wing approach.

The truth is for us both Lab and Con suck. They seem to spend all there time thinking up more and more ways to take our money. The worse part is they use that cash things we don't care aboput and the things we do care about get ignored. I would not mind living in Europe.

Sagacious Dolphin:
"Its why the bill was passed shortly after the 1909(?) budget. "
That's David Lloyd George's Peoples' Budget...a milestone in social reform, which is why the Tories vehemently opposed it.
It's also one of the reasons that Lloyd George sold peerages when he got into power, in order to reduce the massive Tory majority in the Lords (and make some dosh on the side... ).

Left-wing paths selfish? Giving away some of your earnings in taxes to help others selfish? I see now...

Left-wingers tend to be dependents rather than tax-payers.
The most left-wing institutions are universities.

Most left wingers are well educated middle class people who have good jobs. Most poor Daily Mail reading council estate dole bludgers are really right wing.

There's a difference between being right-wing socially (Daily mail readers) and right-wing economically (definitely not Daily Mail readers).
Tax is in the realm of economics IMO.

Doesn't matter your point about most left wingers being dependents is still complete rubbish. Labour was set based on trade union members, trade unions as you know being made up of working people, ie tax payers, not dependents.

I actually find this quite offensive. I have most certainly not had an especially affluent an upbringing - after my dad left and my mum lost her job we were homeless living in a b&b.
For the next couple of years we lived in one-bedroom flats, sleeping on the floor.
So I hardly feel I fall into that category

Alright, if the Brits simply like to moan and complain, when was the last time the Brits were optimistic?

I'm sorry to have offended you.
I certainly don't imaging that everyone in Britain has it easy, but given the numbers of those expressing discontent in the poll, there are statistically bound to be large numbers of well-off people who are moaning without good reason. Obviously you're not one of them.

OK, Why was Britain optimistic in 1966-7, and what changed thereafter?

Football win I think.
We're naturally pessimistic of ourselves and our culture. Which is probably a good thing.

1967 - Scotland beat England at Wembly. Scotland declare themselves World Champions.
