As I stated in the other thread about the subject:
Doing what I did here was really choosing the lesser of two evils.
An early settler like that loses its advantage every turn it wanders, and these guys are not supposed to be explorer units. You gotta drop it as soon as you can. Once I saw that river, alongside a coast, with a mountain nereby that may be our only hope at finding Iron.....I gambled it would be our best bet for awhile. Besides, even looking back, I am not sure 9 turns of walking east to form a city in hostile land would have been a good idea.
I did what I thought was best, and I know most of you understand that. I wouldn't criticize anyone if they were caught in that dilemma.

A question for our leaders
I see that it appears as if our research is set to 90% and that we are spending 36 turns at that rate to discover Iron Working.
Is this so?
And if so, how many commerce per turn are going into research?
Trip? civman? Anybody?

That would be great. I'm at work and I've been sick.
But why then 0gpt income, or is it 2?
I guess we're still paying the French. Darn, I hate those deals for gpt.
Thanks for the prompt reply BTW.

I saw. The trade to get Pottery and some gold was most fortunate.
It seems as if Trip has a knack for discovery and you wasted no time with the opportunity. Excellent.

While we made 3 gpt 3 turns ago, we now make zero gpt because :
Our labourers in Apolyton don't work on the whales tile, but on the mined grassland tile : +1 shield, -1 commerce
We pay the upkeep of the barracks, -1 gpt
Our labourers in BHQ now work on the cleared jungle tile, +1 food, -1 commerce

Panag :
Currently, we don't use the forests at all. Roading them, for the time being, would a complete waste of time. It would also not solve the problem that sea gives more commerce than roaded land.

Also Panag,
Working a forest now would slow our pop growth. Not a good thing with a settler coming up soon. Although working the forest will come in handy later when we've reached 5 or 6 pop. Assuming we get the luxuries to keep everyone working.

hi ,
maybe we should grow towards six and the turn we are six build a settler , next we drop to four , build a worker , in the mean time we are five , then settler , when he is finished we shall just have been six for a couple turns , next a worker , settler and so on , ...
we never fall below four , this way we can keep them happy and get the max out of it , our "food" should be used to its maximum as long as we dont have the granery , ....
to never get below four would be helpful , we get the fish , wale , and then we have an option on what to do with the other two , one should be forest , ....
what you say , .....
have a nice day

Seems the best way Panag, assumeing we can afford to wait for the cities to grow. If we're aiming at invading the French and primarily building military though, the cities could grow in time for this to work.

hi ,
, it would be worth to do it , at first we shall go a bit down on the curve , but we shall climb higher ones we are there , .....more then enough to make up for the wait , ....
and its a way to build units faster , and to get more money , to field more units , ....

Another problem with growing our cities this large would be managing citizen discontent. (Don't forget, we're playing on emperor here, and not only are we unconnected with any luxuries, we don't appear likely to gain access to any soon.) (Except via conquest.)

Another problem with waiting until size 6 to build settlers is that the cities those settlers are to build have to wait many (30+) turns before they are founded.
The delay does not lend itself well to an Emperor game with 16 civs.
Although I am more than willing to examine numbers if someone wishes to go to the trouble to calculate and post them.

Yeah, I was wondering if anyone knows win civil unrest will come into play. Is there a strong chance of it before Case Pink is carried out?

We will constantly be battling civil unrest until we gain 2 or 3 luxuries and have them linked to the road network.
A size 4 city with 2 garrison units will go into unrest. Without luxuries or specialists.

Mr. Speaker, this is all very well and good, but what is the current stance of the government regarding Case Pink? This plan must be carried out, and an enemy must be destroyed, but the question is, which enemy is it that must be destroyed? I believe, sir, that if you go in to destroy France and not America, you will commit a grave mistake, sir. America is what needs to be attacked and defeated. France is a nothing state, run by cowards, it will take little to break. America, on the other hand, will simply become more powerful as time goes by, the Americans will simply expand, at the expense of our own people! The land that we need they will take up, and they will build a mightier army than we could muster if we do not check them in their early stages of construction. It is what is needed, sir, and I believe you know this. And so, sir, I ask, what is the current target of Case Pink?

The current target of Case Pink is unknown, because we don't have enough information on American geography. By Dday's time, we'll hav decided (most probably through a poll) whom to declare war.
