Suggest a game to me
I've been considering many computer games out on the market right now, and I would like to hear opinions from people who have actually played them. I dont want to buy another dud like Tropico, which was only fun the first time or two playing.
Some games I've heard a lot of good things about, are they really good?
Empire Earth
Baldur's Gate 2
Some games I've seen that the concept sounds fun, but havent heard one way or the other if theyre actually good games:
Superpower
Freedom Force
Obviously being here I like strategy games like Civ3 and StarCraft. I also would like to find a good rpg to play, because I've had less and less time to play real life rpgs.

I found Empire Earth rather mediocre, but I'm not a big fan of rts games. (it has a pretty good editor, and the 3 historical campaigns were fun, but I stopped playing after finishing them )
Baldur's Gate 2 is in my top 3 of best rpg's together with Fallout 2 and Planescape Torment. It's even more fun if you've played BG 1.
I loved the idea behind Superpower but it turned out to be a horrible game

If you don't already have it, get Europa Universalis 2.
And do not get superpower under any circumstances!

Freedom Force is a great game. Well worth the money. Haven't even tried the MP games it supports yet...just solo campaign...and it was lots of fun.

buy Fallout 2 if you don't have it yet, should be cheap and it is a good game, Morrowind looks also good.
SuperPower is bugged as hell.

I'm playing System Shock 2 now. That's a fabulous RPG/FPS.

For RPGs, there are zillions of 'em waiting for you for free via emulation, if you're up for the console style. And BG2 or Planescape, as said before, are probably your best bets for computer-style.

Play BG 1 before BG 2, it makes the best thing, the story, even better. For a really good story get Planescape:Torment, though I would prefer BG over PT because BG lasts much longer.

If you are interested in FPS/RPG style games, I would recommend the following:
Thief 1
Thief 2
System Shock 2
Deus Ex
and when they are released, Thief 3 and Deus Ex 2. Potentially.

Final Fantasy VII, actually any Final Fantay, definitely better then the Fallouts.
You're gonna hate me for that but it's the truth.
Baldur's Gates come a close third.
And Imran, SS2 is great.

It may be your truth, but you clearly live in an alternate universe where the FF games don't include fast quantities of meaningless fights in which you get to watch the same guardian force cutscenes over and over and over and over again until you die of boredom. FF VII is the only one I have managed to complete and it has cured me for life from ever wanting to play another one again.

I bet very few of you have played the original final fantasy
I have, for the NES, and its the only one I ever beat.
I didnt get another video game console after SNES. I just stuck with computer games.
I might get a PS2 soon though, but thats not definate yet

That's okay...Just go look in a mirror and tell NotYouEither that I said, "Hi."
Just kidding (I think)
For FPS I recommend System shock 2, and I'm playing Deux Ex now really cool. However, I really suck at FPS; lost my twitch skills. I never made past level 6 on SS2.
Even though I do not like Sierra, Halflife was good, and Homeworld was trippy.
I also just bought GTA3...Just need a socially acceptable outlet for that roadrage.

Ones I've been digging lately:
Grand Theft Auto 3: Pretty much the best world simulator ever made. Tight controls and fun (albet twisted/offensive) missions.
Hostile Waters: This one completely caught me off guard. Got it for 10 bucks at EB. Very much in the Battlezone/Uprising rts meets fps, but with some real nice twists. The only downside is the very scripted nature of the scenarios.
Soldier of Fortune 2: Single player is more fun that it should be and multiplayer is very kinetic (though not a lot of depth). Has an interesting feature in the random map generator.
Civ3: Play the World: You know something is going right when people are playing your game on their own time.

Grumbold:
You have a very valid point there, and I do think that it's very disappointing that it has shunned away so many players.
The truth is, that the random encounters can be pure hell. FF VII has the least of them (heck, there's even an ability that removes them completely in it), at least from the games I have played, IV to IX.
But if you can discover a way to endure pass them, I for instance read a book and keep tapping the "Attack" button, you will find a very rich and enveloping experience. The plots, and the music for one, are truly awesome.
There really should be no need for them random encounters, as they are nothing filling the game, to make it last longer. I see no reason why the necessary leveling up couldn't be arranged with a more humane way.

Huh? Admittingly there is a lot more there than only FPS. But it is FP for sure, then shooter then RPG....just seemed to have a lot of FPS elements....more than anything else.

so what if it isn't?
it's the same game no matter what genre somebody thinks it belongs to.
this reminds me of that old-and-pointless "Diablo 2 is not an RPG!" debate that people were having when it came out.
