Stats do not an RPG make.

If you are going to be fussy about the classifications of games, don't be calling things roleplaying games just cause they've got stats.

Personally I'd recommend 2 free online games I'm playing.
The big one is Runescape a MMORPG (massive multi-player online RPG)
It really is a massive game and is free, although to acsess the full game you do need to be come a member... You can access half of it without though.
The other is Realm Fighting which is a turn based Sratergy Game.. Each turn take a day, and allthough you can only play it for 20 days for free its good fun... If you want to carry on after then you have to re-register a different name.

No, they don't. Thief is an RPG.

My point was that it isn't an FPS.

I see your point. Personally I wasn't counting a FPRPG as a category. It is a FPS to me simply because of the interface. Although I admit, it is the roleplaying elements that make it good.

For me a RPG involves playing a group of characters in a party...stats galore, items, magic. Usually in an isometric view.

It would be interesting to see where other lump it, that is, if they had to choose simply between FPS or RPG.

The point is, surely, that such genre classifications are really arbitrary and therefore irrelevant.

Does this mean that a game like, say ... Everquest ... is a First Person Real Time Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game? ... or FPRTMMORPG? Or is it really 'turn-based', because that's what combat esssentially is (I attack, you attack, I attack, you attack, etc. etc.)? Or is it even 'role-playing' if you don't play on a specified role-playing server?

you could go on like this forever...

whichever way you look at it both Thief and System Shock 2 are damn cool games ...

I agree with FP on this one. You can classify them any way you really choose, and make a pretty good arguement about your choice no matter what that choice is, but any classification is largely irrelevant.

John III,

I can dig it.

SB & FP,

I agree, games are starting to be a mix of the old styles, not that I am complaining or anything.

Man I'm totally hooked on Deux Ex. I'm totally Jonesin' for the next level....too bad I'm sitting here at work.

I remember a debate about whether or not a game is an RPG and the end result was thus -

If success mostly depends on character skill, it is an RPG.
eg - Baldur's Gate 1/2, Morrowind, Fallout 1/2, Arcanum, Might & Magic 1-9.

If success mostly depends on player skill, it's not an RPG.
eg - Deus Ex, Thief 1/2, Quake 1/2/3, Half-Life, Hexen 1/2.

There are however games which require equal amounts of both and can't really be classified.
eg - Diablo 2, System Shock 1/2.

The point being that having 'RPG elements' doesn't make a game an RPG.

Getting back on topic, I suggest for Diablo 2 as well for quick and stupid fun.

i find Baldur's Gate 2 to be quite enjoyable. after beating it, i continued with my characters in the Throne of Bhaal (the expansion) and started a new game as well (to try out another character class, and do some of the sidequests/stronghold stuff that'd i'd missed in my earlier games)

If you like the 60'es cartoon heroes (and rpgs), then go buy this game, you wont be dissapointed if you're just looking for a good SP game... If you're looking for a good MP game, then this game is NOT what you want, you have almost no possibilities in MP (No strategy, no large maps, no light maps (Where you can actually see what's going on), no point...)

And just for the record: This is the only rpg game that I like (I HATE all other rpg games)

If you like the concept, you should also take a look at www.cityofheroes.com

In City of Heroes you play as ONE superhero in one giant online city. The game should be more in depth than Freedom Force, and it has much better graphics. But to be able to play it, you need to pay a monthly fee, which is the only reason why I'm not buying it. I haven't kept up with the news about the game though, so I don't know if the game has been released yet...

On the consoles: The SNES was the best console system for RPGs, easily. Sadly, many of the best were never released in english (huzzah for emulation(own the origional cartrige, first )). I've always liked FF6 better than 7,8,9,or 10. I just liked the style; the sprite graphics.

The Thief games are both good, the Fallout games are both good, SS2 is good, and Deus Ex was good. I wholeheartedly reccomend any (or all) of them.

Right now, I'm playing Morrowind and Neverwinter Nights, and I've started to play Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingom. I like these, as well.

On my Gamecube, I'm still addicted to Smash Brothers. It's one hell of a good game.

Hope I helped, at least some.

BG2 and the expansion are a good buy, because BG2 alone takes eternity before you can finish it (you can skip most of the game though, by only following the main plot.. but wouldn't recommend it, it's less fun, and you miss a lot of l33t items and and events)
the expansion, has some reallly overpowered items though, i mean, a simple merchant in the countryside only has +3 magical weapons as a minimum!! whereas +3 magical weapons normally are quite rare in the D&D realm

Thief is also one of the greatest games you can get, it's original, it's very addictive, and the athmosphere is quite spooky, it sucks you into the game, and the guards say pretty funny things too, the hammerites praying for example is hilarious and, you can't kill the enemies just like that, you have to use skills, and your blackjack which is the most important weapon in the game... one flaw is that it's just too addictive

empire earth -got it here, i have to try it out yet (was busy finishing the AoW2 campaign )

SomeOneElse hasn't posted in 3 months, according to his profile.
Maybe he's gone into an extended lurking phase, or maybe one of these games we mentioned was so addicitive to him that he hasn't had time to visit 'poly in weeks.

I'm a bit of a retro when it comes to games. Nothing is cheaper than the freebie abandon games. One to download is Colonization and if you like trading in the renaissance world, Merchant Prince.

If that's the case, I highly recommend XCOM (known in Europe as UFO: Enemy Unknown).

Fallout 1+2 can be bought in a budget pack nowadays. I highly recommend it.

Also I continue to wave the flag of Close Combat 5. What with the small but very alive community and exciting gameplay it's grrrrrrreat. Oh and there are nazi's in it. This can prolly be bought in budget version too.

Yes Close Combat III and V are still favourites of mine that get dusted off and played at least once a year.

I've got Close Combat I to III (in one packet). Is V better than all of them? I'd heard IV wasn't that good.

IV was criticised partly because you were limited in your ability to move squads around to rest them or send them to another area of the front. V is better at this while still allowing for multiple sector fighting, not just the single chain of missions. Its also more of a balanced game than III which is very tank heavy. The village and hedgerow terrain is much more suited to infantry combat with limited tank support. If you visit sites like JP's Panzers you'll find that most of the amateur mods and resources are for CC III and CC V. I'm glad I own both.

I always preferred TFC. Counterstrike was full of haters. At least there were anti-hater countermeasures in TFC (aka spies, medics, and engineers).
