Just click on the button in the main base screen that says rename or something like that. I missed it for the longest time too. I is big, and right above the unit window. Middle lower.

Ah, one of the great pleasures of the game for me is renaming the captured bases of my enemies. Even after I have given them back to my (now) slave, they provide amusement. Nothing like turning Godwinson's Hope into Godwinson's Hopeless etc.

The funniest renaming I ever saw took place in a game my sister was involved in. She was the Spartans, and she captured the Gaian base "The Flowers Preach". Having already entered an aggressive renaming policy but not feeling like thinking too hard for a name, she tacked one word onto the end of it. The Gaians attacked their former base, "The Flowers Preach Death", until the earth ran with blood, but my sister held the base until the end of the game.
Most of her base names in that game were like that. House of Knives, Palace of Pain, and Blood On The Water were just a few. It tells you what style of player my sister is.

Then there must be something wrong with your game. When you open the base screen, the button should be right in front of you.

I dunno...
It specifically says "Base Rename", right? I've been playing SMAC/SMAX since they came out, and I used to rename bases...took a 3 month break and I can't find it anymore...
At work, will check when I get home.

Just press the r key on your keyboard when you have the base screen open.

I think the button is cunningly hidden as the actual base-name. Click it, and IIRC that'll let you rename it.

I swear I've clicked on the base name, shift clicked, alt-clicked, ctl-alt clicked, ctl clicked, etc., and nothing happens...because that's what I thought, too . No go. Will play around more when I get home.

Dude! There's a freakin' big button right in front of you on the base screen that says RENAME. I've used it tons of times. Maybe try patching to the latest version, but I'm pretty sure it was there even in SMAC v1.0.

I'm at SMAX 2.0. If you can find it, let me know, otherwise I'll just use "r".

Just like BustaMike, I really can't understand how you can look besides the 'Rename' button. Glacialis, could you please post a print screen of your SMAC game while there is a base screen open?

I'm with them -- the " RENAME" button is HUGE and is just under the table that shows the allocation of energy.
The only possible solution I can think of is with your screen resolution/ settings. I can recall a time I opened up the game and the screen settings/ resolution or whatever were such that everything on the screen was very very big to the point that the base screen only showed one table (nuts, min, energy) and I would have to toggle that one off to see the energy allocation table ( and the Rename button IIRC).
Oh and the r button worked for me as well. I was not aware of that keystroke method before

Sigh
Yup, that was it. Resized to 1024, and all is fine. Must have been this latest install...though surprisingly, from all the problems I've heard about, other than hiding the REALLY FREAKIN OBVIOUS "Rename" button, it installed on XP Pro just fine. Thanks all!

Free Drone Central is better to name Nerve Stapling Center .
Dreams of Green->Dreams of Red
Memory of Earth->Memory of Memory of Earth after i nerve gas it and build a new base there.
Bird: Cry->H'minee: cry
Freedman's park->Slave labour camp
the lord's wrath->Marr's Wrath (or yang if you like)
Yang Mine->You're Mine Yang!
Pavlov biolab->biochemical weapons lab
Safe Haven->No longer Safe
Roberts' Dread->Robert's Dead
When you're the usurpers you're always at war and there's no shortage of bases you need to rename. things like terror's delight though are fine how they are.

A really devout Gaian/Cult player should rename this base to "Dreams of Purple"

I always thought that the Believer's "He Walked on Water" was funny enough... Once I played as Morgan and, when I conquered that base, I would like to rename it to "He Walked on Water Using Morgan Hovershoes (TM)" but, alas, the game would not let me do it...

The names of the Believer's bases are almost exclusively taken from the Bible. Zak might be lucky enough to rename the base to "I Know the Stepping Stones"

I'd care to point out that SMAC comes with two defined resolutions, and that unless you force it definining some parameter in the .ini file, the game chooses the best fit one to your current screen resolution.
Other catch tho, is that chosen resolution does NOT adapt *dinamically*.
Thus, to see the game screen so big that its elements don't fit in the screen, you must have been in one of these cases:
- you work at 800x600 and *willingly* forced SMAC to always run at 1024
- you work at 640x480, and lowest SMAC resolution (800x600) is bigger than that
- you have a SMAC session *OPEN*, and you switch your screen resolution underway: if you start SMAC at 1024 and then switch your screen to 800, the "pixel dimensions" of the game elements drawings have already been determined and fixed in relation to linear dimensions in the previous resolution, and DO NOT get re-adapted. In this case the rightmost and bottom elements of the game screen will fall indeed outside of screen limits, and you won't see them.
But if you switch to 800 *before*, and *then* you "open up" a new game session, that session will regularly & visibly start at 800 (unless you forced it...)

A couple of those names are actually parts of the lyrics to The Battle Hymn of the Republic. See how many you can spot.

Haven't seen more than those four names, but there are a few good potential names:
Grapes of Wrath
Fateful Lightning
Across the Sea

Yeah, those would be cool. Maybe "The Beauty of the Lilies"? That might be getting a little long, though.

Mr. President, might just fit, I think the box is 24 characters wide But it look more like a Gaian base name.
