Researching Tech
When does this halt?
When does this start?
Ive never been sure exactly, do you need to build a city to begin research, or is something else needed?

You need to be generating at least 1 science beaker somewhere so yes you need a city.0% science with no scientist specialists and it will stop.

You need to have trade arrows going to science. This necessitates building a city and having science set to anything over 0%.
When does it halt? Setting science to 0% and changing all scientists to tax collectors or entertaners. Endgame aside, no idea why you'd want to.

Vlad - in SP I frequently turn Science off once I have Crooks & Clads - my caravans and dips do any furhter research and the stupid AI doesn't take the opportunity to streak ahead ...

Scouse Gits.....a major flaw in the game IMO...the AI shouldn't slow down research to match your speed......its a real shame this happens

Yeah... I agree War, but it's the flip side of the AI cheat program that keeps pace with you for research when you build a massive SSC. You discover tech quickly so does the AI. If they fixed this along with one or two other things like the AI building cities in decent locations - then we would have Civ 2.75, a game most Civ 2 vets would love to play.

BTw i should have stated that the ai matching speeds either way is a major flaw..thanks for correcting me !

Scouse Gits, I don't understand, how can a caravan research?
Thanks for telling me about the percentages

When a trade caravan is delivered you get a one off gold bonus - this is matched by a one off beaker bonus - hence caravns do your research for you ...

p.s. you need an ein somewhere to actually tip the beakers out as a tech - you can only fill the box with caravan bonus it never actually 'completes' until a genuine research beaker gets put in

What's odd is that I've seen AI civilizations set their research rates to zero. Many times. One time as long as 500 game years. (This was approaching 0 AD.) All the while, I was skimming along at 50% or 60% research.
Ah well, all the better for me.
