Worked my way up from Chiefton to Emperor winning. So voted Emperor. Haven't tried diety yet. Have to kick more butt or Emperor before stepping up.

Regent on a regular basis now. However, I did win one Monarch game by the skin of my teeth... it was a diplo win. I was about to lose to a war when I built the UN. Talk about an excellent plan B.

"I'm curious to see how the bell curve forms." (Platykurtic? - just kidding)

Interesting - the distribution is one would expect from a non-normal distribution. Are we abnormal? (or just an overly experienced sample).

Sadly, the highest I've won is Regent. But I'm only a casual gamer, so it hardly matters anyway.

The last full game I played I beat on deity. Since then, I haven't played civ much at all, though.

I haven't played anything else than Regent so far... Started on it (yes, it was NOT a very good idea to start on Regent... ) and still playing it - it is challenging enough for me, as I consider myself a casual player only... I have been able to win with Romans, Egyptians, Greeks, and Babylonians so far...

BTW - the distribution seems pretty Gaussian to me now... that is how I'd expect it to be.

I'll most often win emperor games.

Once I've gotten to know the game fairly well (after about 1,5 month) and after intense playing, I've sticked to emperor games longtime.

Meanwhile I've beaten deity two times (out of approx. 10 attempts in a row). Playing deity is not much fun at all and luck (starting location, early wars or not, AI stances toward you, ...) plays a major role.

Emperor rules !

(and deity can be overcome)

Most games I play either at Monarch (fun games, win rate 100%) or Emperor (challenge games, win rate maybe 2 out of 3). I have beaten Deity, but I don't consider it fun and entertainment... maybe I'm not masochist enough .

My answer is virtually identical to Sir Ralphs except that I have only tried deity a few times and quit when I judged my starting position to be untenable (ie 20 aztecs swarming around by 3500BC).

Someone on another thread indicated that others were saying there was little difference between levels. Depends on the levels. I'd say that
1. The difference between Monarch and Emperor is that on Emperor you have to grovel and play catch up on most occasions until well into the industrial age. On Monarch, you can be more commanding.
2. On Diety, you can't play catch up. They simply run away from you.

So, I flip flop from Monarch to Emperor and back. Diety might be a possible win, but I'd need to pop a settler from a goody hut and get lucky in having the AI civs at war with each other the whole game while I putter along in democracy. With my skills, Diety is not a challenge, but rather an exercise in mascochism.

It's kind of sad that the deity level is overwhelmingly strong due to cheats (far too many starting units, other bonuses) and extreme tech devaluation, that flies by ways too fast.

IMO it's not serious that you actually haven't got many choices playing deity: you'll simply be running awfully behind (in terms of expansion, techs) throughout the biggest (and best) part of the game, hoping (or deliberately aiming) for a catch up later on.
(except if you're Aeson and keep on building and exploiting every single piece of territory available )

Yo alva848 (why the 848?),

I've stayed away from these forums for quite some time now as I find most things already have been mentioned a thousand times ...
or maybe because I just love my prince status

But when PTW and MOO3 arrive, I'll be back.

Hasta la vista baby!

PS: the strategy forum has some new decent threads, I've noticed. Happily, not everything is declining

Deity level is tough, but it's not too hard to win. Since AI is cheating so bad, they could get to the modern age very quickly; that also mean that you could get to the modern age quickly too.

But I was affraid someone might take me seroiusly and spend the next 2 years of their life actually trying to do it.

Let's just says that

I won on Diety once then quit playing that level because it sucks. It cheats enormously and the chance of you winning depends mostly on luck. Diety just isn't an enjoyable experience. The AIs trade techs insanely, and they cheat with elevated science and production. I ended the game in 1300 with nukes. Something just doesn't seem right about that. Emperor is the best level to play.

Yo alva848 (why the 848?),
the ALVA part is more or less my initials of my real name.
the reference to the infamous duke is completely coincedental, but a nice touch i guess
The 848 part was needed to log in at another side, ALVA was allready taken, so they came up with a few alternative suggestions, one being 848 wich i guess sounds better then 534 or951 or something

Onn topic: the higher the level, the more micromanagement you need to do. I don't think you can get away with putting yours city's on auto-pilot on deity
has anyone tried this and lived to tell btw

EDITED : typo's be damned !!!

I've had the game for like 8 months and i've unfortunately always get side tracked. I've only played a handful of games out to completeion, winning on Regent my last few times.

Ah, the poll looks almost like a pretty good curve, unfortunately, to many have not one yet . Hopefully that will change soon .

Do people lie on Apolyton ?

At least 3 voted for a level that doesn't exist, bet some others exaggerated as well.

I've not won yet but I've only played at regent so far. I think Ill take a step down and see if I can win at warlord.
