AFAIK, the "banana" thing was started on the Lord of the Rings forums JohnT frequented. JohnT brought the idea here, and it caught fire. In time, it spread to the on-topic forums.
(There's also a Banana Party in the OTF. If there's no banana option in a poll, they vote en-masse for one of the other options. This is all just rumor, though.)
