also, i dont think the US could endure a major war against a country like britain right after a destructive civil war that killed hundreds of thousands.

According to various Web pages, in 1812 the land hungry U.S. marched 12 000 soldiers into lower canada.
It wasn't untill 1814 that Britain replied with 14 000 highly trained and well equiped troops. The barely trained mostly farmers from the U.S. never stood a chance and were sent packing.
later in the 1860s the bill of the Annexation of Canada was proposed declaring all Canadian land and municiple buildings, property of the US. However despite much diplomacy and trade embargos the US were unable to make it stick.
What do you think then Canadians would you rather be states in the US or stay part of the commonwealth?

The Canadians will say the Commonwealth. They don't have Scots to the north of them to worry about. Just us Americans to the south.
As far as the War of 1812, the US led a very small militia invasion of Canada early in the war, were beaten back, Canada/Britain did the same, same result, so nothing really happened at all on that front.

O Canada! Terre de nos aïeux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!
Car ton bras sait porter l'épée,
Il sait porter la croix!
Ton histoire est une épopée
Des plus brillants exploits.
Et ta valeur, de foi trempée,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.
Moi, je suis Canadien aussi.
Add me to the club please!

lol, don't get me wrong, I've got nothing against the good 'ol yanks , but I don't think you'd find many Canadians who would want to leave the commonwealth and become the 51st state.

I used to live in Montreal... well, not exactly. Dollard Des Ormeaux, just west of it. My brother is doing his Masters there now.
Now I'm an Ontarian.
I'm moving quite soon but I'll still be in Ontario. It's where the jobs are...
Where in Quebec are you from?

Ontario? oh.. poor you! Can ya atleast find a good poutine shop? If ya can't.. well god help you!
I live in Longueuil.. ya know, south shore.. just south of MTL. But.. for most folk, i just say I live in Montreal, cuz to explain an off-island suburb is hard.

Congrats on princedom! Pretty soon, you'll have a custom avatar too! This forum has done wonders for my post count. And I'm pretty sure I'm not spamming either!
Surprisingly, they've got poutine everywhere in Ontario. It's not half bad either. Depends on where ya go, but the chip trucks can usually be counted on for some good stuff. Thick, dark, beefy gravy on top of fresh cheese curds and large cut fries... mmmm... You know, even New York Fries makes a decent poutine and they've got a number of franchises around.
I was out east in the Gaspesie just a week ago and I discovered that they have a McHomard (McLobster) there that you don't find here in Ontario...
I know what you mean about off-island suburb, that's why I usually say MTL instead of DDO. Even here in Ontario it's the same, but the amalgamation makes it actually true. It's weird. There are "cities" that now cover thousands of sq. km and have tiny, scattered populations.
