Totally true, I think. Maybe one little comment: not only the civ-specific advantages are a must-know, but the situation can also greatly influence the game. One of the key elements of a game is to assess the situation early, and build up a plan to gain most out of it.

Sometimes, keeping away from ancient warfare can be the best thing to do... most of the times it will mean you'll be battling to get even up until the late industrial era. You have to know whether you'll be a warmonger or a builder (or any combination in between), and this is not only dictated by the choice (random or not) of civ. On emperor, you should be able to play all kind of styles.
