Run a search of "packet sniffer" on Google and check out the links. You need to have substantial background in TCP/IP networking to use one properly though. I am not sure if they have anything free for Windows, which is probably what you are using.
Your best bet is to get a copy of ZoneAlarm. It's free. It blocks outgoing connections.

Not necessarily, if you configure your browser properly and never ever run any program that you don't know what they do.
Running programs you are clueless about is the #1 cause of getting your machine wrecked.

I always run Adaware after installing any freeware programs. I read on their site that there was one spyware program that, once installed, proceeded to uninstall Adaware. Nasty stuff.

well in total, not that bad, considering I dont use a firewall and I m always late on microsoft IE updates.
but on the other hand I almost never surf porn and warez, and I never install programs I dont trust.
one entry in the list was Radiate, but it comes with FlashGet I am using for download, so I let it live. But some other entries made me wonder where I picked them up.
my next stop now is MS site... need to get updated on browser security

Speaking of spying on browsers' habits - doesn't Apolyton log your IP address?

Yep...that's what that button way over to the far right above your posts is for. Regular posters can't check it, of course, but the mods and admins can use it to block accounts from the same IP and such.

You need to give Grokster both access and server rights: right click on the ZA icon in the task bar > Restore Zone Alarm Pro Control Center > Program Control > Programs tab

Oh yes, a final question- before I load the software- does it in any way prevent you from receiving Javascript or cookies?

DC, no.
You just run it every now and then like a virus sweep. It's not on all the time. I think there are settings to turn it on all the time...but I don't bother...

What does it do when it 'virus' sweeps?
And is it good to use if you only use a 28.8 modem and aren't connected 24/7?

With that limited amount of bandwidth, you would want all of that 28.8 to yourself and not sharing it with other products that spy on you. It would be a good idea.

It just goes through your directories and looks for known spyware. You can take that stuff and put in a backup directory. And can eventually delete it if you want to. Just DL it. Or go to www.lavasoftusa.com. They have the info there.

Yeah, but you need check marks for both "local" and "internet"
My question is what do you mean by "doesn't come on?" Do you mean the program runs but can't access the Internet? If so, try removing the program from the list of programs in ZoneAlarm, then run it again and grant it the rights it asks for.

Or get a screenshot of the programs in ZoneAlarm. Then we can tell you exactly what the problem is.

BUT how do you know the software GP recommends to eliminate spyware is not in fact putting spyware on your computer?

this program has been recommended by trustworthy companies (if such a thing exists ), it does get some good revieuws. well i guess you can never be certain.
It doesn't matter either: let's suppose it get's rid of 30 pieces of spyware and puts 1 back, then you are still winning

So just how does so much spyware end up on one's computer? About the only things I download are updates to various programs I have on my computer, or the occasional file helper. I also have an old iMac (circa May 1999) that's the main "surfin" machine.
